Here are our Five Reasons to Read: Like Real People Do by E.L. Massey!

1. If you are looking for a really solid hockey romance, this could be it!

2. It has top notch banter

3. The disability (seizure disorder due to TBI) and service dog rep felt really good

4. While this doesn't have the same spice level that Heated Rivalry does, it has all the heart

5. I love how Alex learns to support Eli and how good they are together

Simply More by Cynthia Erivo is a quick and entertaining read.

I didn't know much about her prior to seeing her in Wicked, and she has since blown me away with her talent. This short memoir gives the reader small glimpses into Erivo's life, a life where she was often told that she was too much, and how she didn't let that stop her. Be it acting, singing, or running, she has always put her more-ness into it, and, personally, I think the result is pretty amazing.

If you have the chance to listen to the audiobook, I highly recommend it.

Here are our Five Reasons to Read: How to be Okay When Nothing is Okay by Jenny Lawson!

1. This is a quick read, but lots of information is packed into every page

2. Lawson’s humour is on full display, as usual

3. I love that it’s made very clear that the tips and tricks are what worked for the author, and she explains how/why, and that maybe they won’t work for everyone

4. This is the type of book that you’ll pick up over and over to read bits here and there

5. The cover is hilarious and I love it

I really enjoyed A Girl Like Her by Talia Hibbert! I find that Hibbert's books are fairly hit or miss for me, and this one really hit.

We start the book not knowing a lot about Ruth, but she is 100% an outcast, treated as a pariah, harassed by the whole small town. Her new next door neighbour, Evan, isn't into gossip and wants to learn about his nerdy, comic book loving neighbour himself. But she doesn't make it easy.

This is grumpy/sunshine, with my favourite microtrope of food as a love language. Grumpy/Sunshine doesn't always work for me, but I think this time it did because the reason why Evan is so sunshiny is actually based on past grief and trauma, and Ruth is so grumpy and prickly at least partially because of her own past trauma. She is also autistic, and I think that Hibbert did a really good job of writing her in a way that seemed authentic to me (I am neurotypical, so ymmv). And I just love that Evan took his time and really got to know her. This is another thing that doesn't always work for me, the 'I'm so in love with you, but I'll just be your friend for now'. I think it takes a skilled writer to make this work and not come across as problematic and creepy. And I love that Hibbert clearly shows the difference between being a good and kind person, and being a creepy creeper.

Overall, really enjoyed this and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
