Happy Friday! For this week's Flashback Friday, we are going back 77 years!

Back in May of 1949 the Brandon Fire Department obtained a new 85' Aerial apparatus! Chief G. Bain, Deputy Chief J. Wall, Captain's J. Selbie, B. Carney and G. Watson Sr along with the other members of the department were on hand for this exciting day.

Happy Thursday! Do you know where the best place to store your fire extinguisher is? Fire extinguishers should be mounted in plain sight along normal paths of travel, near room exits, and within 75 feet of any potential fire hazard. They must be placed close to high-risk zones like kitchens and garages, positioned 4 inches to 5 feet off the floor.

Key Placement Rules

Exits and Hallways: Place units near exit doors, stairways, and corridors so you can access them while escaping rather than trapping yourself.

High-Risk Areas: Keep them in kitchens (away from the immediate stove grease zone), garages, workshops, and near electrical panels.

Travel Distance: Ensure no person has to travel more than 75 feet (or 30–50 feet for flammable liquids) to reach an extinguisher.

Every Level: Install at least one unit on each floor or level of a home or building.

Happy Wednesday! Did you know that in 2020 BFES saw a transition to a new PSCS (Public Safety Communication Service) digital two-way radio system which provides better coverage over a more secure network.

An orange button emergency alert feature is incorporated into the top of the new radios and one on the lapel mic that firefighter/paramedics can push to activate an emergency tone in the event they find themselves in a Mayday emergency. This allows an uninterrupted call transmission to be placed from the firefighter/paramedic to the Incident Commander.

The previous system that was used was called the FleetNet system and it was in place for approximately 30 years, but it was found to be so outdated that, in some cases, replacement parts had to be ordered from eBay.

Happy Tuesday! Well for students in the Brandon School Division next week means it is back to school time, so that means that driving speeds in school zones are back in effect.

Remember that from September to June when you are in a school zone from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday the speed limit is 30 km unless otherwise posted.

Remember to:
1. Observe speed limit
2. Slow down and pay attention
3. Speeding (such as driving 50 km/h in a 30 km/h zone) can result in steep fines, such as around $312
4. U-turns and passing other moving vehicles in designated school areas when children are present or rules apply are strictly prohibited

Happy Monday! Did you know that careless smoking is a leading cause of fire-related deaths?

If you or someone you know smokes, please keep the following tips in mind:

1. Use a large, deep sturdy ashtray that is placed on a stable surface.
2. When possible, smoke outside and remember to never flick your butts.
3. Never smoke in bed.
4. Do not put cigarette butts in any type of vegetation planter such as flower or tree or in peat moss as not only does it not look nice, but these items are also flammable and could start a fire.
5. Clean out your ashtrays and make sure that the cigarette butts are wet before discarding.

Happy Friday! 67 years ago tomorrow, the Brandon Sun had documented the members of the Brandon Fire Department having training sessions outside of the Central Fire Hall.

These sessions continue today as having a department that is ready for any type of incident is imperative to saving lives and property but also keeping every BFES member safe.

Happy Thursday! When a caller dials 911, the Brandon Public-Safety Communications Centre (BPCC) call taker asks, “911, What is your emergency?”

Call takers are trained to ask a few brief questions to help determine which agency is required. BPCC’s job is to connect the caller as quickly as possible to the appropriate agency. The BPCC call taker will remain on the line with the caller until the agency answers. The entire process typically takes approximately 20-30 seconds.

On average, BPCC is responsible for creating approximately 360 events per day, each of which require multiple phone calls to coordinate.

Happy Wednesday! Did you know that challenge coins are small, medallion-like tokens, often adorned with the emblem or insignia of the presenting organization.

Challenge coins serve as a symbol of membership, belonging, and camaraderie, forging a strong bond among those who possess them.

According to some, the tradition of giving challenge coins was started by the U.S Military during the First World War and then the Canadian Forces started using them in 1974.

Outside of military organizations challenge coins are also used by fire and police departments, motorcycle clubs, science, media, business, education and labour unions.

Today, challenge coins used by fire departments identify the bearer as a member of a particular unit with a well-defined history and mission. These coins are specifically minted and engraved with images and symbols that represent the firefighter's courage, bravery, and dedication to service.

BFES has found these coins to be an excellent means of team building and creating a sense of camaraderie and belonging. BFES has had many different styles of challenge coins over the years. Challenge coins are not for purchase.
