BNRC Opens Overnight Warming Space in Response to Extreme Cold
The Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation (BNRC) will open an overnight warming space in response to extreme cold temperatures forecasted for Brandon this weekend.
From 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, until 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2026, BNRC will provide a warm space for individuals in need at the BNRC BEEP Garage, 440 Rosser Avenue. Weather forecasts indicate temperatures dropping below –55 degrees Celsius with wind chill, creating life-threatening conditions for those without adequate shelter.
The temporary warming space will have 25 seats available overnight, with multiple staff members and security personnel on site to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the building. Other shelters in the Brandon area have been notified and may refer overflow clients to BNRC during this period.
“We are not able to regularly provide this service, but with temperatures like this, we couldn’t stand by and watch unhoused individuals suffer,” said Karra Burney, Executive Director of BNRC. “We are not creating a new shelter—this is about filling a temporary need in the hopes of saving a few lives on what is shaping up to be the coldest night of the year.”
BNRC has partnered with the City of Brandon on this emergency response, with the City supplying additional security measures to help ensure a safe and supportive environment for all who access the space.
This decision was made collaboratively by BNRC’s Executive Director, staff, and Board of Directors, recognizing the urgent need to protect vulnerable community members during this period of extreme weather.
