While NLPS encourages interaction from platform users, we expect individuals making comments to show respect for fellow users and ensure discussion remains civil, especially since students may be viewing the content and comments. Individual comments or posts that do not follow our commenting guidelines may be hidden or deleted without further notice. Repeated disregard for the guidelines may result in the user being blocked from the page. To ensure exchanges that are informative, respectful of diverse viewpoints and lawful, we will not allow comments that are or include:
Off topic. Points unrelated to the purpose and subject of the main post. Comments that are abusive, hateful or intended to defame an individual or organization. Complaints, concerns, or confidential information about individual students or employees. Language. Comments including but not limited to: profanity, discriminatory comments, threats, obscenity. 🪶 CELEBRATING TREATY WEEK AT KEHEWIN CREE NATION! 🌾✨

On Thursday, September 10th, Associate Superintendent Janalee Slaney was thrilled to join H.E. Bourgoin Middle School Principal Tracy Casselman and HEB students at the Kehewin Cree Nation School Pow Wow! 🥁💃🕺

This incredible event was part of Kehewin’s Treaty Week activities, marking a monumental milestone: 150 years since entering into Treaty 6.

Our students and leadership were honored to experience the grand entry, drumming, and dancing together with our community partners. 💙

🌟 MEET YOUR TRUSTEE: Lois Phillips 🏫✨

Lois was born and raised in Lac La Biche and comes from a deep-rooted local family. Before joining the Board, she spent decades in NLPS classrooms as "Miss Phillips," teaching K–3 students in Lac La Biche and Kikino Métis Settlement until her retirement in 2021. As a third-generation teacher and lifelong learner, public education is truly in her DNA!

Now serving in her second term as trustee, Lois brings her passion for children, family, and community to division governance. She serves as the board representative to the Public School Board Association of Alberta, sits on the Policy Committee, and takes a deep personal interest in the Truth and Reconciliation Committee. (And whenever she’s off duty, you can usually find her spending time with family, enjoying a hot cup of coffee, or cheering on the Edmonton Oilers!) 🏒☕

🌟 MEET YOUR TRUSTEE: Roy Ripkens 🏫✨

A lifelong Albertan, Roy brings a wealth of educational knowledge, administrative experience, and local dedication to the Board. Roy spent decades serving NLPS students as a teacher, principal, Director of Instructional Services, and ultimately Deputy Superintendent before his retirement in 2016.

First elected as a trustee in 2021, Roy's passion remains centered on driving student achievement and expanding innovative career education pathways. Beyond NLPS, he has lent his expertise to crucial organizations across Alberta, serving on the Attendance Board of Alberta, the Lakeland Centre for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Board, and two terms on the Portage College Board of Governors.

🌟 MEET YOUR TRUSTEE: Jim White 🏫✨

A recognized and respected Elder of the Kikino Métis Settlement, Jim brings a wealth of wisdom, life experience, and deep community spirit to the Board. Following his high school graduation in Lac La Biche, Jim dedicated over 30 years to public service with the Edmonton Police Service. Throughout his career, he focused on Aboriginal liaison work, crime prevention, su***de intervention, and family violence prevention, while pioneering EPS's Aboriginal Job Development Program to recruit members from diverse and Indigenous communities.

Since retiring, Jim has devoted his time to volunteering across his home community, serving as an Elder for the Settlement Council and the local school. As trustee, Jim is deeply committed to guiding our division with wisdom, fostering strong partnerships, and ensuring every student and family feels supported, valued, and connected across NLPS.
