May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Whether you struggle with mental health issues, have in the past, or just want to support your family and community, we hope you will engage with spreading awareness.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter formed in the brain and gastrointestinal track. It’s also a very important chemical in the body, helping in regulating mood, digestion, and memory by relaying messages between areas in the body. This is why some people with depression are characterized as having low serotonin levels!

Serotonin, in very high or very low amounts, can be problematic for regular body function. However, if you’ve been feeling down lately, here are some activities proven to increase serotonin production!

☀️ Spend some time in the sun!
🏋️‍♀️ Get some exercise!
🚦 Lower outside sources of stress in your life!
🍣 Eat a meal rich in tryptophan (an amino acid used in synthesizing serotonin), such as fish, chicken, eggs, or cheese!

Do you have something you do when you’re feeling down? Leave it in the comments below!

Need someone to talk to about feeling low or other mental health crises? Call in to ask about our counsellor, or dial the Alberta Mental Health Helpline at “811”.
