NDP: $5 BILLION BILLY BISHOP PLAN DOESN’T ADD UP

QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP MPP Chris Glover (Spadina—Fort York) and Shadow Finance Minister Jessica Bell (University—Rosedale) say that committee hearings on Doug Ford’s plan to expand Billy Bishop Airport have shown the senseless nature of the Conservatives’ latest scheme:

“There is no business case to expand Billy Bishop,” said Glover. “The Minister of Transportation — despite being asked repeatedly — is still unable to explain why he believes this would generate $8.5 billion in economic revenue. The only thing it’s sure to generate is more traffic congestion downtown.

“The Toronto Port Authority revealed that it would cost $5 billion to expand Billy Bishop airport to accommodate eight million more passengers. This is a complete waste of money when Pearson is currently investing $3 billion to accommodate an additional 23 million passengers.

"Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Toronto MPs have tried to take a backseat on this issue, but they can’t sit on the fence any longer. The people of Toronto deserve to know where they stand. The Federal Liberals must listen to their constituents, who are loudly rejecting this move, and kill the Premier’s asinine plan that would destroy the waterfront Torontonians love and waste five billion taxpayer dollars.”

“Doug Ford’s plan for Billy Bishop makes no financial sense,” said Bell. “The Toronto Port Authority confirmed in yesterday’s hearings that this project could cost up to $5 billion. The airport expansion is likely not economically viable without a massive government handout.

“We also learned that both the Ford and the Carney governments are in secret closed-door conversations with the Port Authority over the Billy Bishop airport expansion, and the rest of us are in the dark, including the City of Toronto. Toronto residents don't want this airport expansion, and the people in charge know it. That's why they're not telling us about what's in store for us.”

NDP: FORD IS FAILING CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WITH HIS CUTS TO SPECIAL EDUCATION

QUEEN’S PARK — Following today’s Auditor General report on special education, Ontario NDP Shadow Education Minister Chandra Pasma (Ottawa West—Nepean), and Shadow Minister for the Ontario Autism Program Alexa Gilmour (Parkdale—High Park) say that Doug Ford’s underfunding is failing students, education workers, and families:

“Ontario’s special education system is in crisis,” said Pasma. “The province is failing students at every step. Teachers lack the resources to implement individual education plans, which along with exclusions, aren’t being tracked by the Ford government. Staff-to-student ratios are completely unsustainable; as many as eight students per educational assistant, and as many as 76 per teacher.

“Students aren’t getting the support they need. It’s not safe for them, or for education workers. The Premier is spending millions on private jets and vanity projects, while school boards can’t even cover the costs of this broken system. His priorities have never been clearer.”

“This report is frightening,” said Gilmour. “Despite the fact the Auditor General consistently heard that student needs are becoming increasingly complex, students and education workers have been cast aside by Doug Ford. Parents are forced to navigate a confusing system, where resources don’t include practical tools or how to access assistance.

“Every child deserves to be safe, happy, and supported in school, and not excluded because of a lack of resources. Every education worker deserves a safe working environment, where they’re empowered to make a difference in our kids’ lives. Parents and families deserve peace of mind. The Premier needs to stop ignoring these people, and start upholding his responsibilities.”

Wondering why you keep seeing a Protect Ontario ad every single day? It's because the Ford government is trying to hide their Jobs Disaster from you.

Today is about more than remembrance.
It is about recognizing the scale of loss and refusing to accept that this continues.
Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people deserve safety, protection, and justice, not delayed responses or incomplete action.
Families deserve answers. Survivors deserve to be believed and supported.

No more stolen sisters.
No more stolen lives.

This cannot end with awareness alone.
It must lead to action that is visible, measurable, and sustained.
