๐ Celebrating Our Summer Students!
On Friday we proudly acknowledged and celebrate the summer students who worked with us throughout the summer! Thank you to the Hangry Miner for accommodating us and serving up a fantastic meal for our crew! Hangry Miner Bar & Grill
These young people have made a tremendous contribution to our community. They maintained our green public spaces and parks, helped set up for community events, and served our community with clean drinking water at the ADWS. Their dedication, energy and commitment have not gone unnoticed. ๐
But summer student employment opportunities are ultimately about the student โ not the organization.
At the Town of Wabana, our mission this year was to create meaningful work experiences that would have a lasting impact on youth as they enter the workforce. We wanted our students to leave their summer employment with more than a paycheque โ we wanted them to leave with experience, confidence, knowledge and skills they can carry with them into their futures.
Thanks to the generous support of the Northpine Foundation, an additional 30 students had the opportunity to participate in summer employment this year. This investment in our youth provided them with an opportunity to gain valuable real-world work experience right here in our community.
This year, we also introduced a Career Development Day, providing our students with a workshop-based learning experience focused on preparing them for life beyond high school.
Students had the opportunity to learn about:
๐ฐ Saving money, budgeting and understanding credit โ and how these skills impact real-life financial choices.
๐ Resume preparation and recruitment โ giving students the tools to effectively present themselves to prospective employers.
๐ค Interview strategies โ helping them build the confidence and skills needed to succeed in an interview.
๐ผ Workplace trends and employment โ providing insight into what todayโs workforce looks like and what employers are looking for.
๐ค Artificial Intelligence and employment โ exploring how AI is changing the workplace and the opportunities and challenges it presents.
๐ก Design thinking โ encouraging students to approach challenges creatively and develop solutions.
Equipping our young people with the knowledge, skills and resources they need to face the world outside of high school is incredibly important. We believe that investing in youth isnโt just about creating employment for the summer โ itโs about helping create opportunities that can influence their future.
Today, we celebrate THEM โ their hard work, their accomplishments and the contributions theyโve made to our community.
To all of our summer students: Thank you! ๐
And to the Northpine Foundation, thank you for investing in our youth and helping us provide even more young people with the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience this summer.
From all of us at the Town of Wabana โ we are proud of you and wish you every success in the future! ๐
