Dear Fire Service Partners,

On behalf of the Nova Scotia Firefighters School, we would like to offer a sincere apology for instances where courses were communicated or discussed with Fire Departments without the ability to fully guarantee their delivery.

We recognize that training planning requires significant time, coordination, and trust. In some cases, our communication created an expectation that certain courses would proceed when the necessary approvals, resources, or confirmations were not yet in place. For this, the School takes responsibility.

We want to be very clear that none of the School’s current staff are at fault for this situation. These issues stemmed from previous processes and decisions, not from the professionalism or efforts of the staff currently supporting the delivery of training across the province.

The matter has been addressed through a clear recognition of the problem, a review of internal practices, and a change in leadership to ensure appropriate oversight, accountability, and controls are in place. As a result, steps have been taken to ensure that courses are only communicated or promoted once delivery can be fully guaranteed.

There was no intent to mislead Fire Departments. However, we acknowledge that the impact of these communications caused frustration and uncertainty, and for that we sincerely apologize.

The Nova Scotia Firefighters School deeply values the trust placed in us by Fire Departments across Nova Scotia. Rebuilding and maintaining that trust is a priority for the Board of Directors and Executive, and we are committed to improved transparency, consistency, and reliability in all future communications.

Thank you for your patience, professionalism, and continued commitment to firefighter training and safety. Should you have any questions or wish to discuss this further, we welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly.

Respectfully,

Nova Scotia Firefighters School
Board of Directors and Executive Leadership

Firefighters from Greenwich Fire in Kings County conducted Ice Rescue training this weekend.

Our Instructor sported a brand new ice rescue suit supplied by FireSafe HQ for us to try out.

The members pictured here all members of Greenwich Fire’s special operations team which was formed after and in response to, the West Hants flood incident in 2023. Members expanded their water rescue disciplines from 8 members with ice rescue training to 24 members in the past two years. Additionally, from 0 to a now 16 members trained to technician level 3 in swift water response.

We’re happy to be of service.
