Pair of Structure fires🔥 keep members busy

Members of D Shift responded to two mutual aid structure fires in the Big River area this past Thursday.

The first request for assistance came shortly after 1:00 a.m. Crews arrived first on scene to find a small structure fully engulfed in flames. An attack line was quickly deployed, and firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in a short period of time.

Later that night, members from Bathurst Fire Service’s St. Anne Street Station were again requested for mutual aid and responded to a second structure fire involving a larger building that was heavily involved. Crews worked alongside paid-on-call firefighters from the Bathurst Fire Services Saint Anne’s stations to bring the fire under control.

Firefighters returned to their stations at approximately 6:30 a.m. following several hours of firefighting operations.

Both fires remain under investigation, and no injuries were reported.

Members from IAFF 5283- A Shift were dispatched to a structure fire on Bayview Drive on Sunday afternoon, May 17.

While en route, the officer of Pumper 8 observed a large smoke column and requested an additional alarm, bringing in off-duty career members to the scene. A second additional alarm was later requested, bringing paid-on-call members from the Bathurst Fire Service St. Anne Station.

Crews from Pumper 8 and Pumper 2 arrived to find a well-involved working fire being driven by high winds. Attack lines were deployed for both interior fire attack and exposure protection. As additional resources arrived on scene, firefighters initiated an interior attack and completed a primary search of the structure.

During search and rescue operations, two cats were removed from the fire and rescue efforts were attempted on both cats.

Firefighters remained on scene conducting overhaul operations. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

We would like to thank Bathurst Police Force, dispatch services, NB Power, and the paid-on-call members from the Bathurst Fire Service for their assistance and support during the incident.

For media inquiries related to fire operations, please contact the Director of Fire Services or the City of Bathurst Communications Department.

The members of IAFF 5283 would like to extend our deepest sympathy to our brothers and sisters of St. John’s IAFF 1075 on the passing of one of their local president Jim o’toole

Our thoughts and prayers goes to his family, friends and coworkers in these difficult times

The IAFF is saddened by the death of St. John’s Local 1075 President Jimmy O’Toole, who died from complications of occupational cancer.

A fire fighter since 2001 and a union leader for over a decade, Jimmy was fiercely committed to the health and safety of members across Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Canada.

Long before his own cancer diagnosis in 2018, he helped lead the effort to establish presumptive coverage for 11 occupational cancers in Newfoundland and Labrador. Even as he faced cancer himself, Jimmy helped build on that progress by expanding presumptive coverage to include eight more cancers in 2022.

That advocacy continued through his service on the IAFF’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee, where he represented members across eastern Canada and helped shape the union’s work on occupational cancer.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Crystal, and their sons, Gavin and Ryan. We keep them – and all who knew and loved Jimmy – in our prayers.

🚨🔥Structure fire🚨🔥

Around 3:00 a.m., Members from the Bathurst professional firefighters Association IAFF 5283 responded to reports of smoke in the 300 block of St. Patrick Street.

Pumper 8, staffed with two firefighters, arrived to nothing showing but quickly located a working structure fire. As crews began operations, Pumper 2 (2 firefighters) arrived, bringing the total to just four on scene. An additional alarm was immediately requested.

An interior attack was initiated, but heavy fire and extreme heat forced crews back. During the attack, one firefighter fell through the floor — narrowly avoiding falling to the fully involved basement and avoiding any serious injury by catching himself and his partner grabbing him by the SCBA bottle.

With conditions rapidly deteriorating, crews transitioned to a defensive strategy.

Mutual aid from big river and roughwaters paid on call members were requested to the scene and firefighters worked for hours to control a stubborn fire hidden within collapsed structural areas.

This incident is a stark reminder of how close we came to tragedy. With only four firefighters on scene, the outcome could have been much worse.

This week, the City of Miramichi announced the addition of 8 full-time firefighters. Staffing is not a luxury — it’s a NECESSITY.

Thank you to Bathurst Police and dispatch, Paramedic from Ambulance New Brunswick, Bathurst fire service st Anne stations paid on call members and nb power for their assistance .

The fire is under investigation and no injuries were reported
