The Board of Directors of the Shelburne County Senior Safety and Services Society extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and clients of Gloria, who passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026.

For the past 10 years, Gloria generously volunteered her time as a valued member of our Board. She was a strong and compassionate advocate for seniors and for those who could not advocate for themselves. Her kindness, gentle nature, and dedication to helping others made a lasting difference in our community.

Gloria will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with her. Our thoughts are with her sisters, Marilyn and Susan, and all those who are mourning this sudden loss.

Leaving to mourn are her two surviving sisters Marilyn Ray (Leon) of Penticton BC, and Susan Calnen of Elmsdale NS. She was predeceased by one sister Nanci Marie McLennan (October 4, 2022). Her surviving precious kitty, Cara Mia, is happily adjusting to her new home.

SHOULD YOU ADD YOUR ADULT CHILD AS JOINT OWNER? 🇨🇦

Adding an adult child to your home, bank account or investments may seem like an easy way to avoid probate.

But the probate savings could come with much bigger risks.

✅ THE POTENTIAL BENEFIT

With true joint ownership and right of survivorship, the asset may pass directly to the surviving owner instead of through your estate.

That can potentially mean:

✓ No probate on that asset
✓ Faster transfer at death
✓ Greater privacy

⚠️ BUT CONSIDER THE RISKS

Adding an adult child as joint owner could:

1️⃣ Trigger tax

Transferring beneficial ownership of appreciated investments or real estate may create a taxable disposition.

2️⃣ Reduce your control

You are no longer necessarily the only person with rights over the asset.

3️⃣ Expose the asset

Your child's creditors, bankruptcy or relationship breakdown could potentially put the asset at risk.

4️⃣ Affect your home

Joint ownership could create complications involving the Principal Residence Exemption and your child's future HBP/FHSA eligibility.

5️⃣ Create family disputes

Was the account actually a gift to the child?

Or were they added simply to help manage your finances?

That distinction can become extremely important after death.

💡 SPOUSES ARE DIFFERENT

Joint ownership between spouses can often be more effective because Canadian tax rules generally allow qualifying property to transfer between spouses on a tax-deferred rollover basis.

THE BIG LESSON

Don't add someone to an asset just to save probate.

The probate savings may be small compared with the potential tax, legal, creditor and family consequences.

Get legal and tax advice before changing ownership.

Every donation is helping provide essential safety and accessibility items for seniors in Shelburne County when other funding isn’t available.

Small changes make the difference between a daily hazard and living at home with dignity.

Right now, several seniors in Shelburne County urgently need basic accessibility and safety upgrades that government programs don’t cover. In partnership with Senior Services- Shelburne County Senior Safety & Services Society, we set a lean goal of $1,700 CAD to tackle these needs directly.

From securing a lift recliner chair to delivering a sturdy wildlife-proof waste box, 100% of this fund goes straight into local homes.

If Shelburne County has ever felt like home to you, please consider chipping in or sharing this post with your local network. When the whole South Shore pulls together, reaching $1,700 is well within reach.
