Did You Know? 🦞

The very first Great Lobsterman Challenge was held in 2011 during the Cape Sable Island Causeway Boat Races.

Back then, it looked a bit different than it does today!

Originally a two-person team relay, competitors had to race through a series of traditional lobstering tasks that tested both strength and endurance, including:

🦞 Putting on fishing gear
🦞 Coiling rope
🦞 Carrying gear
🦞 Banding lobsters
🦞 Stacking lobster traps

What started as a fun challenge celebrating the skills of local fishers has grown into one of Lobster Festival's most anticipated events. Be sure to catch this year's Challenge, Thursday night at 6:30 at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena!

Beach days just got a little easier.

We’re happy to share that the Mobi-Mat has been installed for the season, helping improve access to the sand and shoreline at one of our most beautiful beaches.

We have an extension on the way to help add more access at the beach!

Now THIS is a cool sighting off the southern tip of Nova Scotia!

A Brown B***y was recently spotted resting on a fishing boat offshore in the Bacarro area. A tropical seabird that is considered a very rare visitor in Nova Scotia waters.

These birds are normally found much farther south in warm ocean climates, making sightings like this incredibly exciting for birders and nature lovers alike. Nova Scotia has only had a small number of documented Brown B***y sightings over the years, including historic records tied to Shelburne County.

Moments like this are a reminder why the Municipality of Barrington is considered one of Eastern Canada’s hidden gems for birding and wildlife watching. From pelagic surprises offshore to coastal migrations, you never know what might show up next.

Have you spotted any unusual birds lately in our region? We would love to see them!
