The Simpcw Indigenous Initial Attack crew has officially started gearing up for the 2026 wildfire season. The crew has been busy getting equipment ready, completing training, and making sure everything is in place for another safe season.

What makes our Indigenous Initial Attack contract unique is our service area. Our crew is dedicated to protecting Chu Chua and the surrounding communities. Unlike other crews in the province, our team will not be deployed away from home. They will always be here locally, ready to respond and help protect our community when wildfire threats happen close to home.

We are also proud to have the late Sheldon Eustache’s logo now displayed on our trucks. Sheldon was a huge part of getting the Indigenous Initial Attack crew started.

The Chu Chua Volunteer Fire Department is looking for new members from Chu Chua and the surrounding area. If you have ever thought about joining the fire department, helping your community, or just want to see what it is all about, this is a great opportunity to come check it out.

The First Nations’ Emergency Services Society (FNESS) will be in the community on Friday, May 8th and Saturday, May 9th putting our new and experienced members through the Exterior Operations Training Program.

Training starts at 8:30 AM both days at the Chu Chua Firehall:
📍 6588 Dunn Lake Road, Chu Chua

No experience is needed. Come out, ask questions, meet the crew, and see what being part of the fire department is all about. Volunteering with the fire department is a great way to give back to the community, learn new skills, and be part of the team.

OPEN BURNING CHANGES – KAMLOOPS FIRE CENTRE

The BC Wildfire Service has announced new burning restrictions starting May 7 at 12:00 PM.

Chu Chua is located in the Kamloops Fire Centre, so this applies to us.

❌ What is NOT allowed:

* No Category 2 fires (medium piles, grass or stubble burning)
* No Category 3 fires (large piles, multiple piles, windrows, large area burning)
* No burn barrels or burn cages
* No fireworks or exploding targets
* No air curtain burners, carbonizers, or incinerators

✅ What IS still allowed:

* Small campfires only (Category 1)
* Must be no bigger than 0.5 m x 0.5 m
* Propane, gas, or briquette stoves for cooking

Quick reminder:

Even when campfires are allowed, conditions are very dry right now.

* Keep water and tools nearby
* Never leave a fire unattended
* Make sure it’s fully out before you leave

Even if the spring feels mild, dead grass from last season is dry and can ignite easily. The Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC) measures how easily fine surface fuels like grass and needles can catch and carry fire, and spring values are often high. The FFMC varies by region and topography, so conditions across B.C. may not be the same.

When it comes to grass fires, wind matters more than temperature. Wind dries fuels quickly and drives how fast a fire can spread. If it's a windy day, it's not a good day to burn.

Before any open burning:
📱Check whether burning is permitted in your area at gov.bc.ca/fireprohibitions
👀Never leave a fire unattended.
💦Have an adequate water supply and a hand tool, like a shovel, within reach at all times.
👉🏼When you're done, make sure your fire is fully extinguished and cold to the touch.
