The File Hills First Nations Police Service was honoured to be part of the ‘Celebration of Leadership & Community Sprit’ hosted by the Carry The Kettle Elders yesterday.

Chief of Police Dean Lerat spoke and presented to the newly elected Chief of Carry The Kettle - Cliff Thomson with a painting and sweet grass.

File Hills First Nations Police Service looks forward to working with the new leadership and increasing public safety for the people of CTK.

Congratulations to our newest member, Constable Aimee Derkach!

Graduating today from the Saskatchewan Police College Class #92. You overcame tremendous adversity during your training and did exceptionally well. We are very proud of your success!

Cst Derkach will now complete field training over the next few months and will be a great addition to the Carry The Kettle Detachment for our Police Service.

File Hills First Nations Police Service is Saskatchewan's one and only Standalone Indigenous Police Service. Our officers train alongside our fellow Saskatchewan Police Services at the Saskatchewan Police College and hold the same status and authority in the Province of Saskatchewan under the Police Act.

File Hills First Nations Police Service
Carry the Kettle First Nation

On the evening of Friday, May 29, 2026, File Hills Police Service received a 911 hangup call from a female who reported that she had been run over by a vehicle and was bleeding badly. The call originated from an unknown location on Carry the Kettle First Nation, with only coordinates available.

Officers conducted a search of the area using the provided coordinates and located the female victim, who had sustained serious injuries. Investigation determined that the victim was run over and dragged by a vehicle. EMS attended and transported the female to Indian Head Hospital then on to Regina General Hospital.

A female identified as the driver was located on scene, arrested, and has been charged with the following offences:
• Assault
• Assault with a weapon
• Dangerous driving causing bodily harm
• Impaired operation of a conveyance
• Impaired operation over 80 causing bodily harm
• Fail to comply with a release order

The accused was remanded into custody and appeared in Fort Qu’Appelle Provincial Court June 1, 2026.

We want to give a big congratulations to Starblanket Cree Nation on bringing the Buffalo back home to Treaty 4 lands. Starblanket joins neighbouring File Hills communities of Peepeekisis and Okanese First Nations in having their own herd.

Fifteen Bison total, 13 females and 2 males came from Alberta and were released on the Starblanket First Nation, Saskatchewan, Canada.

This week we honour the Treaties. Sacred agreements built on respect, peace, and a common future.

The File Hills First Nations Police Service is proud to serve and protect several Treaty 4 Nations every day. We do this work with integrity, cultural understanding, and a genuine commitment to community safety and wellness.

Our hope is clear: one day serving all of Treaty 4 with the same dedication and respect.

May 17 to 23 is Treaties Recognition Week in Saskatchewan.

Treaties are foundational agreements between the Crown and First Nations that continue to shape rights, responsibilities and relationships across Saskatchewan.

This year marks 150 years since the signing of Treaty 6, following Treaty 4’s 150th commemoration in 2024. These milestones provide an opportunity to learn more about treaty history and the important role treaties continue to play for all Saskatchewan residents.

File Hills First Nations Police Service were proud to be present and witness history in the making at the Tri-Nation MOU signing involving Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation, Piapot First Nation and Pasqua First Nation.

Chief of Police Dean Lerat was proud to don his ceremonial headdress to represent File Hills First Nations Police in the Grand entry and to congratulate the Chiefs of each nation.

The File Hills First Nations Police Service welcomes the opportunity to potentially expand our Police service to represent the Tri-Nations in the near future.

The File Hills First Nations Police Service (FHFNPS) was incorporated on December 20th, 2002 as Saskatchewan’s first and only self administered stand alone Police service and currently services the First Nations of Little Black Bear, Okanese, Star Blanket, Peepeekisis and Carry The Kettle.

*UPDATE*
2026-06-01 Charges have been laid in relation to the wildfire.

2026-05-11 The fire appears to have been contained once again thanks to the hard work done by the fire teams today. Monitoring is ongoing.

A fast moving wildfire is moving north, west, and east spreading from Starblanket First Nation towards Little Black Bear First Nation. The fire has consumed multiple minor structures and threatened several homes.

Advice for residents:
• Stay vigilant and be aware of any fires near your home
• Avoid areas where firefighters are working to allow them plenty of room to operate safely, due to the smoke the roadways have near zero visibility
• Those with homes in the fire path be prepared to evacuate at a moments notice

Please share this with your neighbours and follow instructions from your local band council, firefighters, and emergency services.

All File Hills Nations Fire Teams as well as Balcarres Fire Dept are on scene.

File Hills Police members Cst. Rosborough and Cst. Montgrand dropped in at the annual Métis Nation of Saskatchewan Spring Fling at the Métis farm north of Lebret on this beautiful day.
