πŸ›‘ Carbon monoxide is the silent killer β€” colorless, odorless, and deadly. Now the law in Ontario is changing to protect every household. οΏΌ

πŸ“† Effective January 1, 2026
πŸ“ New rules under the Ontario Fire Code

βœ… What’s New:
πŸ“Œ CO alarms must be installed on EVERY floor of your home β€” not just near sleeping areas. οΏΌ
πŸ“Œ Applies to homes with:
πŸ”Ή Fuel-burning appliances (furnace, water heater, stove)
πŸ”Ή Fireplaces
πŸ”Ή Attached garages
πŸ”Ή Heated air from a fuel-burning appliance outside the home (e.g., utility shed units) οΏΌ

⚠️ This includes homes, townhouses, apartments & condos. 
πŸ“ CO alarms must still be near each sleeping area too.

August 7, 2025 – Due to hot and dry conditions, the Townships of North Dumfries, Wellesley,
Wilmot and Woolwich are suspending open air burning, effective immediately.
The ban prohibits all fires except those set for the sole purpose of cooking food in a contained
fire pit. Cooking fires should be attended constantly and extinguished completely after use.
Current fire permits are suspended, and no new permits will be issued by the Townships until
further notice.
Failure to comply with the ban could result in charges and/or fees for service if the Fire
Department is required to extinguish an unauthorized burn.
If the hot and dry conditions persist, a full fire ban could be implemented to include cooking
fires.
Forecasts and conditions will be closely monitored and updates as necessary will be posted on
municipal websites and social media.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week runs November 1-7 and North Dumfries Fire Department is reminding everyone to recognize the health risks and danger CO poses with tips, suggestions, and advice on how to protect your family and stay safe.

2024 marks the tenth year that communities across Ontario recognize CO Awareness Week to promote the use of CO alarms and to educate Ontarians about CO including how to prevent exposure, the health hazards of CO poisoning, and what to do in the event of a CO leak.
