Happy Sewing Machine day from your friends at Hillary House! This unofficial holiday celebrates the day in 1790 when British inventor, Thomas Saint, recieved a patent for the first sewing machine design. In honour of this auspicious occasion, we want to show off one of our very own Singer sewing machines. This particular machine belonged to Dorothy Hillary and was manufactured in 1902, making it 124 years old!

This painting kit belonged to Nora Hillary, and has her name and "Aurora, Ont" inscribed on the top near the handle. Made to be easily portable, this set contains everything an artist would need to create beautiful works of art, like the landscape painted on the inside of the kit. Painting outside, ("en plein air") was trendy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with painters like Tom Thompson, Emily Carr, and the Group of Seven chosing to use the natural scenery around them as their studio.

is back!
Did you know? The first flushing toilets were introduced to the public at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London by a man named Josiah George Jennings. They were nicknamed "monkey closets" because Victorians thought the plumbing looked like a monkey squatting, yet over 800,000 visitors spent a penny to use them, making Jennings over £2,000. In later years "spending a penny" became a euphemism for using the bathroom.
