Spring may be winding down, but you might still spot a few trilliums blooming in the forest!💚

The white trillium is Ontario's official provincial flower and can be found blooming in forests across the province each spring. While white trilliums are the most common, they can also be found in of shades maroon, pink, yellow, and green!

These beautiful wildflowers grow extremely slowly, often taking 7-10 years to produce their first flower! Since they are sensitive to environmental disturbances and take so long to mature, trilliums are often considered a sign of a healthy forest ecosystem.

If you're lucky enough to see trillium during your visit, remember to admire it from a distance! Picking flower a stepping off trail can damage these sensitive plants and the habitat they depend on.

Help protect Ontario's wildflowers by:
🥾 Staying on trails!
📸 Taking photos instead of picking flowers!
🌿 Watching your step in natural areas!
🌱 Leaving plants and habitats undisturbed!

Next time you're exploring the park, keep an eye out for these iconic blooms hiding among the trees!

👀 Watch out for Garlic Mustard! 👀

This plant may look harmless, but garlic mustard is actually an invasive species that can spread quickly through forests and crowd out native plants that wildlife depend on.

How to identify it:
🔍 Heart-shaped or scalloped leaves
🔍 Small white flowers with four petals
🔍 Smells like garlic when the leaves are crushed

Garlic mustard spreads fast and can take over trailsides and forest floors, leaving less room for Ontario's native wildflowers and plants to grow.

How you can help:
🌱 Stay on marked trails to avoid spreading garlic mustard seeds!
🌱 Clean off shoes, bikes, and pets following a hike to help limit the spread of seeds!
🌱 If removing it, pull out the entire root and place the plant in a black garbage bag left in the sun for about a week (not compost) to help destroy the seeds!

By learning to spot invasive species, we can all help keep our parks healthy and thriving! 💚

The animals at Mara Provincial Park would like to kindly remind visitors that snacks brought from home are for humans only!

Even though wildlife may look hungry or friendly, feeding animals can do more harm than good. Human food can make wildlife sick, change their natural behaviours, and encourage animals to approach campsites and people looking for food.

Wild animals are healthiest when they can find natural food sources on their own!

Help keep wildlife wild by...
🐿️ Never feeding animals!
🗑️ Keeping food and garbage securely stored!
📸 Admiring wildlife from a respectful distance!
🌲 Leaving natural spaces clean and undisturbed!

While the squirrels may still stare at you dramatically from nearby trees, they'll be okay. 🌰

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢💚

Today we're celebrating Ontario's turtles and the important role they play in healthy ecosystems! Turtles help maintain balance in wetlands and aquatic habitats by contributing to food webs and helping keep ecosystems healthy.

Did you know that all 8 turtle species found in Ontario are considered at risk? Many turtle populations are declining due to habitat loss, road mortality, pollution, and predators.

Turtles also take a very long time to mature. Some species may not lay eggs until they are over 15 years old, which means even the loss of a few adult turtles can have a major impact on local populations.

As you explore parks and cottage country this season, please remember to:
🐢 Slow down and watch for turtles crossing when driving near wetlands and shorelines!
🐢 If it is safe to do so, help turtles cross in the direction they were already heading!
🐢 Protect wetlands and natural shoreline habitats!
🐢 Help keep Ontario parks and waterways clean!

If you're visiting Mara this season, keep an eye out for turtles basking on logs or swimming near the shoreline! 💚

Today is International Day for Biological Diversity!! 🌱

Biodiversity includes all living things and the ecosystems they depend on, from plants and pollinators to wetlands, forests, and wildlife. Healthy biodiversity helps keep ecosystems balanced and supports the natural spaces we all enjoy!

At Mara Provincial Park, biodiversity can be found all around the park, whether it's turtles basking along the shorelines, bees visiting wildflowers, or birds nesting in the forest canopy. Every species plays an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Protecting biodiversity helps keep parks healthy for wildlife and for future generations to enjoy. Even small actions can make a big difference:
🌿 Stay on designated trails!
🗑️ Dispose of waste properly!
🐿️ Respect wildlife and natural habitats!
🌱 Leave natural spaces as you found them!

Next time you visit the park, take a moment to look around a appreciate all the different plants and animals that make Mara such a special place! 💚

Happy World Bee Day! 🐝🌻

Today we're celebrating bees and the important role they play in Ontario's ecosystems! Bees help plants reproduce by transferring pollen between flowers which supports the growth of wildflowers, trees, and many of the plants that wildlife and humans rely on every day.

Did you know that Ontario is home to over 400 species of bees? While honey bees are the most well known, many native bee species such as bumble bees, sweat bees, and leafcutter bees are also important parts of healthy ecosystems.

Unfortunately, many bee species are facing challenges due to habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, and the spread of invasive species. For this reason, protecting bee habitats is more important than ever.

Here are a few ways you can help bees this season:
🐝 Plant native flowers that bloom throughout the season!
🐝 Leave dandelions and flowering plants for bees to visit!
🐝 Protect natural spaces and avoid disturbing bee habitats!
🐝 Reduce pesticide use when possible!

Next time you visit Mara, keep an eye out for bees hard at work around the park!💛
