There's something pretty special about living in farming country.

Drive around Spallumcheen on a fall day and you'll see it everywhere: tractors in the fields, crops ready to harvest, and a whole lot of hard work going into growing good food.

Agriculture has always been a big part of who we are here, and we're lucky to call this valley home.

FOR THE RECORD from the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer:
Growth, Development & Township Commitments

The Township of Spallumcheen believes residents deserve accurate, clear and complete information about growth, development, infrastructure, water, and decisions affecting our community.

The Township understands that residents have legitimate concerns about the potential costs and impacts of growth. Those concerns are taken seriously. The Townshipโ€™s responsibility is to make informed decisions based on facts, applicable legislation, infrastructure capacity, water availability, environmental considerations and the financial impacts on residents and taxpayers.

To be clear:

- There is no Township plan or commitment to increase Spallumcheen's population to 15,000 people.
- There are no signed Township agreements committing the community to the major development currently being discussed.
- A development proposal or application is not an approval or application is not an approval or a Township commitment.
- Any proposed development must proceed through the established public planning processes.
- Future development must be assessed against infrastructure capacity, water availability, environmental protection, emergency services and the financial impacts on existing residents and taxpayers.
- The North Okanagan Wastewater Recovery Project is a regional infrastructure initiative with purposes that extend beyond accommodating population growth.

The Townshipโ€™s commitment is straightforward: residents should know what is being proposed, what decisions have actually been made, and what commitments haveโ€”or have notโ€”been made on their behalf. Full remarks from the Chief Administrative Officer can be viewed on our website www.spallumcheentwp.bc.ca

FOR THE RECORD: Rose Swanson Timber Harvesting

Since 2020, Council of the Township of Spallumcheen has listened carefully to residents' concerns regarding proposed timber harvesting activities on Rose Swanson Mountain.

In response to these concerns, in 2021, Council established the Rose Swanson Select Harvest Committee, bringing together community members to work collaboratively with the Township. Representatives from BC Timber Sales (BCTS) were invited to attend committee meetings so they could hear concerns directly from residents and participate in constructive dialogue aimed at achieving the best possible outcome.

Over the past five years, Council has continued to meet with the Ministry of Forests, BC Timber Sales, and members of the Select Harvest Committee. Throughout this process, Council has consistently advocated for open communication, thoughtful planning, and consideration of the many values that community members have identified, including environmental, recreational, visual, and economic interests.

Council has also taken every opportunity during BCTS referral periods to provide formal feedback, including concerns and recommendations that reflected resolutions passed by the Select Harvest Committee. By doing so, Council ensured that community input was communicated clearly and carried the support and weight of the Township.

We respect the right of individuals and groups to publicly express their views and concerns. While decisions regarding harvesting on Crown land ultimately fall outside the authority of local government, Council has played an active and ongoing role in advocating for the community, ensuring local voices are heard, and maintaining open lines of communication among all parties.
Council remains committed to representing the interests of Township residents and supporting meaningful engagement on matters that affect our community.

More information about the Planned Harvest and the Select Harvest Committee can be found on our website.

It's still dry out there, and the campfire ban that came into effect July 10th is still in place.

๐ŸŽ’ Now is a good time to sort out the basics: a grab-and-go bag for each person in the household, a plan for where everyone meets if you can't get home, and a plan for pets and livestock.

Write down the phone numbers you'd need if your phone died.

Take fifteen minutes this weekend and you'll be glad you did.
