💧 Make Water Work Tip #11: TAKE THE PLEDGE

Armstrong, we only have a few weeks left — and we’re sitting at just 55 pledges. 😬 There are 5,323 of us in Armstrong. Surely we can get that number a little higher.

🎉 Two lucky pledgers will each win a $1000 prize:

💧 A $500 gift card to the local Make Water Work partner of their choice; or
🌿 A $500 VISA gift card to upgrade their landscape with water-wise improvements.

Please be advised that CN Rail will be completing rail replacement work on Mill Street on Thursday, September 17.

📍 Mill Street between Wood Avenue and Pleasant Valley Road
📅 Thursday, September 17
⏰ 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

🚧 Full road closure

A signed detour will be in place while the work is underway. Motorists are asked to follow posted signage and allow extra travel time.
Please use caution around crews and traffic control personnel.

Fall is a great time to prune the trees and shrubs growing closest to your home.

🌲 Trim back branches that touch or hang over your roof
🌿 Prune shrubs away from siding, windows and decks
🏠 Keep vegetation from creating a direct path to your home
🔥 Pay extra attention to evergreen shrubs growing close to the house

Create separation between your home and surrounding vegetation to help reduce the chance of wildfire spreading from vegetation to the structure.

Fallen leaves can be put to work elsewhere in your yard to help retain moisture, just avoid letting them pile up directly against your home, deck or other structures.

🚧 Pleasant Valley Boulevard North Improvements – Update #13

PV Blvd North continues to take shape, with work over the next two weeks shifting toward some of the features that will help bring the finished streetscape together.
Over the next two weeks you'll see:

✔️ Streetlight bases and infrastructure being installed
✔️ Sidewalk removals beginning between Okanagan Avenue and Shepherds Lane
✔️ BC Hydro-related work continuing
✔️ Preparations beginning for new surface concrete and landscape areas

Businesses affected by sidewalk removals will be contacted directly by Chapman Industries to help coordinate access during the work.
What to expect:

• Temporary traffic changes and occasional delays
• Increased construction activity, noise, dust and heavy equipment
• Temporary impacts to parking or property access in some areas
• Businesses remain open, and access to properties will be maintained whenever possible

💧 Make Water Work Tip #10: Use the Leaves 🍂

From wildfire fuel to garden gold — timing is everything.

During hot, dry wildfire season, keeping leaves and dry vegetation cleared from around your home is an important part of being FireSmart.

But now that cooler, wetter fall weather has arrived, those leaves can be put to work!

Rake them into garden beds or other appropriate areas of your yard, where they act as natural mulch. This helps soil hold onto moisture, adding nutrients as they break down, and providing winter habitat for insects.

Think of it as the seasonal yard-care handoff:

🔥 Summer: clean it up and FireSmart it.
🍂 Fall: use the leaves and save the moisture.

🔥 Campfire Restrictions are Changing

Effective at 12 noon on September 3, 2026, Category 1 campfires will be permitted in the City of Armstrong. This decision is consistent with the BC Wildfire Service's decision to lift the campfire prohibition throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre, which includes the City of Armstrong.

A Category 1 campfire is a campfire that is no larger than 0.5 metres wide by 0.5 metres high.

Please note: restrictions on Category 2 and 3 open burning, fireworks, and other higher-risk activities and equipment remain in place.

If you’re planning to enjoy a small campfire, please continue to use caution and follow all applicable provincial and local regulations. A few extra minutes of care can go a long way in helping prevent wildfires and keep our community safe.

💧 Make Water Work Tip #9: Retire the Annuals

Summer is winding down, and some of those annuals are looking a little… tired.

Instead of using precious water to coax a few more blooms out of plants that are naturally reaching the end of their season, it might be time to let them go.

✂️ Pull annuals as they finish
💧 Stop watering plants that are past their prime
🍅 Harvest garden crops as they ripen
🍂 Clean up dry and dying plant material as you go

Watering days:
💧 Even addresses (00–49): Tuesday
💧 Odd addresses (50–99): Wednesday

🚗 IPE Road Closures | September 2–6
• Park Drive – Closed from Pleasant Valley Road to Adair Street
• Adair Street – Local traffic only

🎉 IPE Parade | Saturday, September 5 | 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
Parade Route:
📍 Staging: Pleasant Valley Road, from Rosedale Avenue to Jackson Avenue
📍 Start: Pleasant Valley Road & Jackson Avenue
📍 Finish: Okanagan Street & Rosedale Avenue

Additional parade-day closures and traffic changes:
• Pleasant Valley Road – Local traffic only from Rosedale Avenue to Heal Court
• Okanagan Street – Closed from Pleasant Valley Boulevard South to Patterson Avenue
• Rosedale Avenue – Eastbound traffic only once the parade concludes
