Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the “end” of slavery in the United States and honours the ongoing struggle for freedom, equity, and justice.
While Juneteenth is rooted in U.S. history, its message resonates far beyond national borders. In Canada, slavery existed until 1834, and the impacts of slavery, colonialism, and systemic racism continue to shape the experiences of Black communities today.
At the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre, we believe that gender justice cannot be separated from racial justice. Building safer, more equitable communities requires us to learn from history, listen to lived experiences, and take action against the systems that continue to create barriers and inequities.
Juneteenth reminds us that liberation is ongoing work. We encourage our community to learn more about Black history, celebrate Black voices and leadership, and reflect on how we can all contribute to a more just and inclusive future.
When we recognize injustice, speak up, and work together for meaningful change, we strengthen our communities for everyone.
