🚨 Have you heard of paper mills?

They're pumping fake studies into academic journals at scale, and the damage to research integrity is real.

So we did something about it - together with librarians from across Canada, we built a free learning module that breaks it down: what they are and what you can do about it.

Free. No login. Open access.

This week for Plant Summer Camp, the campers were feeling thirsty and visited the Alumni Aquatic Centre💦 🛟 🥽 🪴

The campers played around with goggles, flippers and even tested out a spinal board. One brave camper even attempted to dive off of a starting block during lane swimming hours. This was all under the supervision of their camp counsellor Angus of course! 🪴

May is Mìos nan Gàidheal / Gaelic Nova Scotia Month. This May, we highlight the achievements of Sr. Margaret MacDonell (1920-2023), a member of the Congregation de Notre Dame (1945), a graduate of StFX (1954, 2000) and of Harvard (1968 MA, 1969 PhD in Celtic Languages and Literature). She began teaching as a professor of Celtic Studies at StFX in 1969, becoming Chair of the department in 1977.

Sr. Margaret worked with Dr. John Shaw to establish the Cape Breton Gaelic Folklore Project, collecting approximately 2000 samples of Gaelic songs and spoken folklore. This material was made available to researchers and students online as the Srùth nan Gàidheal / Gaelstream collection.

She was granted an honorary degree by StFX in 2000, and in 2023 received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for her contribution in the preservation and advancement of the Gaelic language in Nova Scotia. She is fondly remembered at StFX for her nearly 30 years of teaching and research, during which she shared her love of Gaelic language and culture with many students.

This week, the campers were invited by the Biology department to visit some friends in J. Bruce Brown Hall!

The plants visited the Aquatics Room, met their ancient ancestor the green algae, and learned about the exciting research that takes place within the building!

They also got to experience some hands-on learning in a classroom environment, encountering a touch tank with a sea cucumber and watching a tropical tank from afar. 🪴 🪴 🪴

This week, the campers spent an afternoon cozying up in a fireside reading session.
They roasted marshmallows and read from the Angus L. Macdonald Library's Biology section (located on the 4th floor of the Library).

They were also introduced to their camp counsellor, Angus.
