Canada’s push to sell more beyond the American market got a significant boost in July, when merchandise exports to countries other than the U.S. jumped 7.4 per cent to a record $25.6 billion.

That was the third consecutive monthly increase, and non-U.S. destinations accounted for 33.7 per cent of all Canadian merchandise exports during the month.

The biggest increases came from some very different markets, with the Netherlands buying more Canadian iron ore, nuclear fuel and crude oil, Germany taking more copper ores, and exports to China also rising.

Canada’s overall exports actually fell 2.3 per cent in July because shipments to the U.S. dropped 6.6 per cent, driven largely by lower crude oil and gold exports.

That makes the overseas growth especially important because it shows Canadian exporters finding additional demand at the same time their largest traditional market was buying less.

One month doesn’t redraw Canada’s trade map, though three straight months of rising non-U.S. exports suggests diversification is becoming something we can increasingly measure rather than simply promise.

The Tim Houston Government Is Letting Our Education System Worsen—and Our Kids Deserve Better.

Sixth in math, sixth in reading, and seventh in science. Nova Scotia’s PISA results should prompt serious action from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

The department controls the policies, funding priorities, curriculum, staffing frameworks and student supports that shape educational outcomes across the province. These results suggest that the current approach is not delivering the progress Nova Scotia students deserve.

The department must identify what is not working, learn from higher-performing provinces and present a clear, measurable plan for improvement. Nova Scotians should expect stronger leadership, transparent targets and sustained action from those responsible for the education system.

If there was one wish I had about coming to Canada, it would be that I arrived early enough to see Jean Chrétien’s leadership in action here. I listened to his words from Gander Newfoundland today marking 25 years since September 11 and he said “Never mistake our generosity for weakness.”

I came to Canada knowing its generosity firsthand. My family and I were welcomed here with open arms and given a chance to rebuild our lives while other countries chose to close their doors.

And there may be no better place for those words than Gander. When thousands of people suddenly found themselves stranded far from home on September 11, this small Canadian community opened its doors and Canadians offered their homes and every help they could give to complete strangers who needed them.

Kindness with a backbone. That’s a Canada I will always believe in. Thank you PM Chrétien.

🇨🇦🇺🇦 Canada and Ukraine are opening a new chapter in our defence partnership — combining Ukraine’s hard-earned battlefield experience with Canada’s industrial strength to scale up drone production, strengthen sovereign capabilities, and deliver critical technology where it is needed.

This is modern defence cooperation in action: moving faster, building together, creating good jobs at home, and standing shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine in its fight for freedom. Our support is unwavering — and our partnership is only getting stronger.
