For 200 years, fortifications at Fort Malden have witnessed and participated in the struggles which helped forge a new nation out of the North American wilderness. An army garrison, British Indian Department post, dockyard for the Upper Great Lakes and the meeting place for Chief Tecumseh and British General Brock - the fort has been all these. Real and inspiring possibilities await you as you enter Fort Malden National Historic Site. Whether you are looking to take in the beautiful scenery along the Detroit River or venturing into the fort for an authentic 19th century experience, we have something for everyone.

Caldwell First Nation will host a community-led gathering on September 30 to honour the children who did not return home, and survivors of residential schools and their families to support intergenerational healing through remembrance, ceremony, drumming, and dancing.

Meet at Caldwell First Nation Community Hall (14 Orange Street Leamington) by 9:30 am.

The event will include a smudge and a walk down Erie Street to the Roma Club where lunch will be provided.

A costumed interpreter will regale you with tales of days gone by while strolling through the evening darkness in the cool fall air.

The American Navy held the numerical advantage with nine vessels to the six British vessels. The American victory forced the British to retreat, but not before burning down their own fort!

The Americans returned Fort Malden to the British in 1815.

? The enrolled pensioners who lived at Fort Malden beginning in 1851 were given navy blue uniforms with red trim. These uniforms are a stark contrast to the redcoats famously worn by British regulars.

The enrolled pensioners would have worn these uniforms whenever they were on official duty such as garrisoning the fort or the blockhouses.

Thanks again to the Friends of Fort Malden for donating our new uniform, on display in the Pensioner’s Cottage to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Enrolled Pensioners’ Scheme at .

’s Fort Malden by Candlelight event returns on October 23 and 24.

Candlelight Tours at are ideal for any Fall lover. The atmosphere at sundown is enticing (and dare we say, a bit spooky), with the sharp shadows, orange trees, historic buildings, and costumed interpreters with stories to tell.
