From May 30 to June 2, former resident Brianna Voss is taking on an incredible 200 km walk across Nova Scotia to raise awareness for Huntington's disease and raise funds in support of the Huntington Society of Canada. 💙

Brianna’s journey will finish here in Amherst — and our community has the opportunity to be part of welcoming her home!

Join Brianna on Tuesday, June 2, as she completes the final stretch of her journey back home to Amherst. Brianna is welcoming the community to join her walk for the Amherst chapter, starting at 6PM, from Cumberland North Academy to The Elm Tree

Following the walk, everyone is invited to gather at The Elm Tree for a celebration.

The rail crossing on Chamberlain Street / Hickman Street will be closed for approximately one hour this morning - Wednesday, May 27.

Starting at 11 a.m. today, CN will close this rail crossing to complete important work in this area.

Detours will be in place. Please plan an alternate route.

𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟰 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀

A 29-year-old woman from New Brunswick who had been arrested on May 21st, 2026 and held for court was arrested again shortly after making an appearance in court on May 22nd, 2026.

Nellie Landry, aged 29 had been arrested and charged with theft under $5000, possession of property obtained by crime, resisting arrest and breach of probation in relation to an incident on the evening of May 21st, 2026. She was held overnight brought to court on May 22nd, 2026. She appeared on the charges and was released from custody with a court date to reappear.

Shortly after 1:00pm on May 22nd, 2026 Amherst Police responded to a complaint of a theft from a downtown business where a suspect had allegedly stolen articles of clothing. Landry was arrested by Police shortly afterwards and has been charged with theft under $5000 – Section 334(b) of the Criminal Code. She made a brief appearance in court on the new charges and was remanded into custody until Monday May 25th, 2026.

This Saturday, May 23, 2026, Amherst public works will close the "Downtown T" to complete street painting operations in the area. Barricades will be in place from 8 a.m. until approximately noon on Saturday.

- 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 to traffic between King Street and Victoria Street.

- 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 to traffic between Lawrence Street and Havelock Street.

A media release has been issued by Amherst Police Department - Amherst NS:

𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀

A 29-year-old woman from New Brunswick has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses as a result of a complaint of shoplifting at a local business. The value of the alleged stolen items exceeds $2000.00.

Police had responded to the Robert Angus Drive area business on a complaint that a person was in the store and was on conditions not to be. Staff provided a description of the suspect and advised that she had been in the possession of a shopping cart full of merchandise.

Police located the accused in the area of the Amherst Industrial Park pushing a cart allegedly full of stolen items. The accused allegedly tried to run but was arrested. Police also executed an outstanding warrant for failing to appear on a previous theft charge in Amherst NS from an incident on March 18th, 2026.

Nellie Landry, aged 29 has been charged with:

- Theft under $5000 – 334(b) CC
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – 354(1)(a) CC
- Resisting arrest – Section 129(a) CC
- Breach of Probation – 733.1(1) CC

Landry was held overnight in APD custody and was scheduled to appear in Provincial Court on May 22nd, 2026.

There will be no street closures. But, please expect some traffic disruptions downtown throughout the day on Friday.
