The library was very grateful to receive a grant for our summer program fun day!

2026 Community Grant Recipient - South Central Regional Library Altona Branch

This year, the Town of Altona awarded $56,100 in Community Grants to organizations making a meaningful impact in our community. Throughout this week, we’ll be highlighting the organizations receiving funding and the important work they do.

Every year, the South Central Regional Library hosts a Summer Reading Club at its branches, providing free activities, prizes, and summer fun for children in our communities throughout the summer. The goal of the program is to encourage kids to keep reading and stay engaged in literacy over the summer, participate in our in-branch activities, and most importantly, have fun!
This funding will go toward paying for the pool rental for the Altona Library Summer Reading Club Fun Day.

Each year, the Town of Altona accepts applications and awards grants to organizations that contribute to the general interest and well-being of our community.

There are a limited number of funds remaining in the 2026 grant budget, and interested groups can apply for late consideration at https://altona.ca/p/community-grants. You’ll find a full listing of 2026 grants there, as well as the grant policy.

To be considered for a 2027 Community Grant, please submit an application before December 15, 2026

We were waiting for the heat, and it sure has arrived!

At South Central Regional Library Altona, we recognize that not everyone appreciates, or handles the heat. Heat can be dangerous to everyone, from heat stroke to sunburn, and can affect the young and the elderly the most.

If you need reprieve from the heat, don't have air conditioning at home, or are out for a walk and need a rest, feel free to come in and join us in branch. We keep the space at a comfortable temperature, and we have a public water fountain that can refill water bottles.

Read, rest, repeat.

Feel free to come chill with us! - if you need.

‼ not all romance books are created equal ‼

In the last few years, there has been a strong increase in what one can only call a SWOON BOOM.

There has been a large uptake of desire to read romance novels.

In all South Central Regional Library branches, we use a romance genre sticker on the spines of our romance books, for ease of recognition in the stacks.

As of late - we have had some people stop at the desk, and remark to us staff that "there should be warning labels on some of these books."

It seems that the typical mushy, lovey-dovey romance novel is somewhat a thing-of-the-past. And, a lot of it has been replaced with s**t.

Some books are mildly explicit, and others are...well...(insert blushing face)...you get the point.

Now, everyone who enters our branches are free to read as they desire; we do, too!

But, we encourage those who are seeking out the ROMANCE stickers, to do their homework before taking them home. There are many great resources, at the touch of your fingertips, to help you decipher if that particular book would be of your interest, or simply be offensive.

There are too many books in our collection for us staff to know what the spice level would be on those titles, but everyone also has a different level of spice tolerance that they want in their hands.

Happy reading, everyone!
