My Sister's Place (Alliston)

My Sister's Place (Alliston) A safe place for women and their children. We host positive awareness events that are family oriented and take part in many community wide activities.

Women living in abusive situations in the rural and farm communities in South Simcoe County face many barriers to leaving the violence in their lives including: isolation from community supports, lack of transportation, and high rent. These women have often experienced physical, emotional, religious, financial, verbal and sexual abuse within their intimate relationships. Their children may have exp

erienced trauma from the domestic violence they have witnessed in the home.

“My Sister’s Place” provides safe refuge to women and their children who are fleeing abusive relationships or looking for guidance, or counsel. "My Sister’s Place” serves over 1,000 women (and their children) annually in both our residential and non-residential services. In the shelter, staff offer crisis counseling, emergency transportation support, referrals to other community services, and legal and housing support to women and their children. Our Outreach/Legal Advocate travels throughout the South Simcoe County area to provide these same confidential services to women and their children who choose to remain in their rural communities.

“My Sister’s Place” relies on provincial government funding and the financial support of our local communities to keep our shelter doors open for the women and children of South Simcoe County. It is through the ongoing support of community partners, businesses, organizations and individuals that we can continue to provide safe shelter, counseling, and outreach services. We help to HEAL, EDUCATE and EMPOWER women and children and strive to encourage women to live the violence-free lives that they are entitled to. It is our mission to help break down barriers, stop the cycle of violence and educate our community to ensure that women and their children can live with dignity, confidence and abuse free. We are always looking to increase our volunteer team and we promote group volunteering to encourage team building in the workplace. We have a quarterly newsletter and a website at www.mysistersplace.ca

This past Saturday May 23rd we were invited to the Canadian Assoc. of Foot Care Nurses convention in Toronto. We had been chosen to be the recipient of the proceeds of their 50/50 draw. We also spent the day at the vendor market, selling our Wrapped in Courage items and talking with the nurses attending the conference.

We had a rainy day last Saturday attending the Beeton Honey Fest, but we did our best to stay dry and got to meet and chat with some of the festival visitors that were willing to brave the weather.
