💧 Community Water Conservation Notice 💧

The Village of Alert Bay and ‘Na̱mg̱is First Nation are encouraging residents and businesses connected to local water systems to help reduce non-essential water use as drought conditions continue to affect Vancouver Island and communities across British Columbia.

As an island community supplied by a groundwater aquifer, our local water supply depends heavily on rainfall and natural recharge. Conserving water now helps protect our shared water source throughout the summer months and may reduce the need for stronger restrictions later in the season.

Residents are encouraged to follow voluntary outdoor watering recommendations and be mindful of everyday water use.

✔️ Water during recommended hours
✔️ Avoid unnecessary outdoor water use
✔️ Delay pressure washing where possible
✔️ Turn off taps and hoses when not in use
✔️ Water gardens efficiently and repair leaks

📅 Please review the notice for the recommended watering schedule and conservation tips.

Community Notice – Unauthorized Tree Clearing

The Lands Department is reminding community members that any tree felling, land clearing, or timber removal on ʼNa̱mg̱is reserve lands must have prior approval from the Nation.

Recent unauthorized clearing and timber removal west of Whe-La-La-U, along with other reported incidents, have raised concerns about environmental impacts, cultural site protection, public safety, and loss of Nation resources.

The Nation has recovered timber from the affected area, which remains a Nation resource and may be made available for community, cultural, or personal use where appropriate.

Community members needing firewood or timber are encouraged to contact the Lands Department directly.
