Airdrie Knights of Columbus Council 8045 combined forces with local Catholic schools and St. Paul’s Parish to raise donations for the Airdrie Food Bank.
In the ninth year for the Food for Families campaign, which encourages councils to conduct a 40 Cans for Lent program, each member of the council, along with participating parishioners, aims to donate one can of food for each day of Lent.
Knights of Columbus member Wayne MacGillivary said the amount of food raised through the program was the dollar equivalent of $53,274.
"We know hunger knows no season and parishioners and Knights were encouraged to give what they can and drop it off at St Paul's," MacGillvary said. "Monetary donations were [also] accepted and tax receipts were issued through the food bank."
Meghan West, executive director of the Airdrie Food Bank, said the 40 Cans for Lent program continues to be an incredible demonstration of community spirit generosity.
"We are deeply grateful to the Airdrie Knights of Columbus, parish members, and the four Catholic schools’ community for their ongoing commitment to this campaign," West shared. "The continued leadership of the Knights of Columbus and the support of the broader community make a meaningful and lasting difference for those we serve.”
The 2026 campaign achieved 11,419 pounds of food collected, representing a food value of $41,565.16. Combined with monetary donations of $11,709.30, the total reached $53,274.46.
"This project highlights the importance of coming together as a community to help others," MacGillivary added.
