One of the most common things people say when they begin counselling is:

"I just want to be happy again."

It's an understandable desire. Happiness is one of life's great gifts.

But many of us have also been taught—often without realizing it—that happiness is the measure of a successful life. When we aren't feeling happy, it's easy to conclude that something is wrong with us or that life has somehow gone off course.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers another perspective.

In The Happiness Trap, Dr. Russ Harris explains that the goal of psychological health isn't to eliminate painful thoughts or emotions. Stress, grief, anxiety, disappointment, joy, love, and hope are all part of being human.

Instead, ACT encourages us to ask a different set of questions.

Not only: "What is my goal?"

But also: "How do I want to live while getting there?"

Goals are destinations. Values are directions.

When our values become our compass, we can continue taking meaningful steps—even when life feels difficult.

That doesn't mean we stop pursuing happiness.
It means we stop waiting for happiness before we start living.

At the Counselling Support Centre, we believe understanding our minds can be one of the first steps toward caring for them.

What value helps guide you through life's challenges?

Kindness?
Courage?
Curiosity?
Faith?
Connection?
Compassion?

We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Most of us grow up believing that happiness is the measure of a good life.
If we could just feel happier, we’d finally be okay.
But what if that’s only part of the story?
In The Happiness Trap, Dr. Russ Harris introduces a different way of thinking. Rather than organizing our lives around chasing happiness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) encourages us to build lives guided by our values—the qualities we want to embody and the direction we want our lives to take.
Goals matter.
Happiness matters.
But both tend to come and go.
Our values can continue to guide us through moments of joy, uncertainty, grief, hope, success, and disappointment.
Perhaps the question isn’t only:
“What is my goal?”
Maybe it’s also:
“How do I want to live while getting there?”
👇 We’d love to hear your thoughts.
What gives your life meaning, even during difficult seasons?

Only 2 days to go!

ACT for Filmmakers: Living Your Purpose Through Rejection, Uncertainty, and Creative Risk takes place this Friday at the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers.

Creative work often asks us to move forward without certainty. To keep creating despite rejection, self-doubt, perfectionism, setbacks, and fear.

This workshop will explore practical tools from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help filmmakers and creatives stay connected to what matters most while navigating the realities of the industry.

Looking forward to spending the morning with Calgary's creative community.

Rejection. Self-doubt. Perfectionism. Uncertainty.

If you're a filmmaker, writer, actor, producer, editor, or creative professional, you've probably encountered all of them.

The question isn't how to eliminate these experiences.

The question is: How do we continue creating meaningful work when they show up?

Join us for ACT for Filmmakers, a purpose-driven workshop exploring practical tools from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help creatives stay connected to what matters most.

Creative work asks a lot of us.

We put our ideas, stories, and ourselves out into the world knowing they may be rejected, criticized, ignored, or misunderstood. It's no surprise that self-doubt, perfectionism, uncertainty, and creative burnout can become part of the process.

ACT for Filmmakers is a practical workshop designed to help creatives stay connected to their purpose and values while navigating the realities of filmmaking and creative work. Drawing from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we'll explore tools for working with difficult thoughts and emotions without letting them determine the direction of our lives or creative projects.

This workshop is for writers, directors, producers, actors, editors, and creatives who want to continue creating meaningful work—even when fear, uncertainty, and self-doubt show up.
