Today, March 3rd, marks one year since we said goodbye to a pillar of our community, Neil Brewer.
While a year has passed since his courageous battle with cancer came to an end, Neil’s presence is felt every time a pager goes off and a team heads out. As a dedicated member of Kent Harrison Search and Rescue, Neil didn’t just volunteer; he led with heart, grit, and an unwavering commitment to bringing people home.
A Life of Impact
Neil’s contributions to the District of Kent were so profound that he was honored with the Freedom of the District—the highest civic recognition possible. It was a testament to a life spent in service of others, whether he was navigating rugged terrain or mentoring the next generation of rescuers.
"The mountains are a little quieter without him, but the trails are safer because of the foundation he built."

At 1730 yesterday, KHSAR was tasked to rescue two hikers and their dog on Bear Mountain. The hikers had become lost on their way down and ended up in a gulley on the east side of the mountain.
The subjects location was known and KHSAR sent a ground team, including GSAR members and Rope Rescue Technicians, on foot up the Bear Mountain trail. At the same time, North Shore Rescue was requested to conduct a night-time hoist, as the sun had already set and temperatures were very low, putting the subjects at risk for hypothermia. The NSR hoist team was able to successfully begin extracting the individuals and their dog as our ground team reached Bear Lake.
We’re grateful this task had a positive ending and the lost individuals could return home safe. After calling for help they stayed in one spot, which made the operation easier for the rescue teams.
We encourage hikers to pack extra layers and emergency equipment to be able to survive a night on the mountain, even for day hikes! An unexpected night on the mountain can be much more comfortable with a few essential items. Visit BC AdventureSmart to learn more about outdoor preparedness.
KHSAR has had multiple tasks in the last couple of years where people have become lost and ventured down the same drainage on the mountain’s east face. It’s important to pay attention to your surroundings and reassess your route the moment you are unfamiliar with your surroundings. The Bear Mountain trail can be disorienting between the lookout and the lake, but there are trail markers and flagging tape along the trail.
We’d like to thank North Shore Rescue and Talon Helicopters for answering the call for mutual aid.
We’d also like to extend our gratitude to Harrison Hot Springs Fire Department for setting up and managing the helicopter landing zone at the school.

A new tool has landed in the KHSAR fleet! Following the recovery of a drowned individual in the Harrison lagoon this year, we found a need to upgrade our water searching capabilities, as up until now we have been limited to a pole camera when searching under the water. This Chasing M2 underwater drone will allow us to search greater depths with more precision.

Thank you to the Village of Harrison for providing the funding, and to Drone Labs for procuring the drone and its accessories!
