This week we're bringing you not one, but three film-themed staff picks. 🍿

First up: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. If you’ve watched the movie, you’ll love the book even more! (Seriously, go read the book!) This book is about an unlikely friendship set in outer space and it’s full of hope for humanity.

For any fans of the long awaited Devil Wears Prada 2, check out Lauren Weisberger's novel that inspired the first film.

In the mood for some ancient Greek literature? Check out Homer's The Odyssey before the film adaptation hits theatres later this summer. We have a number of different translations--and even a graphic novel--to choose from.

What's your favourite book to film adaptation? Let us know in the comments. đŸŽ„

What is “snappy” cheese, exactly? It’s probably synonymous with sharp cheddar, which is the kind that would certainly stand up best to being subsumed into an equal amount of butter, but doesn’t “snappy” sound a little more fun? I know I’m always partial to the cuter name for a given ingredient. There’s probably not a huge taste-related difference between this spread and the act of just adding the separate ingredients to your sandwich, so this is a texture-based experience: will you add shredded cheddar for that slight variation in mouthfeel, or use some softened MacLaren’s cheddar from the red tub and make one smooth, unified spread? Personally, a mixture like this makes me think of cold roast chicken, tomato, and onion, but this butter is just a foundation for you to build your sandwich masterpiece.

There are two excellent lemon butter recipes on this page, and either one would treat your citrus-loving self very well! The choice may come down to personal preference; one recipe uses yolks instead of whole eggs, which will net you a somewhat more custard-y final result, but the other uses more butter and lemon zest (the latter being one of your author’s favourite ingredients). This is the kind of spread that’s best kept simple: add a generous helping to freshly toasted crusty bread, kick up your feet in the sun, and sink into a gorgeous start to your day. Besides, apple butter has had enough of a day in the sun! It’s 2026, and it’s time for other fruits to get their turn in the butter spotlight!

The only wrinkle in this recipe is the sugar measurement: 7/8 of a cup is a highly specific and extremely annoying amount of sugar to measure, especially because you’ll have to use two measuring cups if you want to be exact! However, if you’ve made the (correct) switch to weight-based measuring, it’s a nicely satisfying 175 grams, which is much friendlier than that ridiculous fraction. You may be thinking that butter cake looks very similar to pound cake – which it is! The only real difference between the two is that butter cake uses a leavening agent (baking powder, in this case). Otherwise, this is another one of those cake recipes that can be dressed up in any number of ways or left as plain as you’d like. Cream cheese frosting and fruit would be a lovely topping, or you could go in an even brighter direction with a middle layer of lemon curd and powdered sugar dusted overtop. Regardless, this is a lovely option for a base that’s only limited by your imagination.
