Boil Water Notice
(E. coli Present in the Drinking Water)
Date of Issue: November 8, 2024
E.coli bacteria were found in the Clearbrook Waterworks District’s water supply on November 7, 2024. These bacteria can make you sick and are a particular concern for infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
• Do not drink the water without boiling first or otherwise treating the water.
• Boil water for 1 minute (rolling boil). Preferably use a kettle so as to reduce the risk of burns. Let it COOL before using.
• You can choose to use bottled water.
• Boiled or bottled water should be used for DRINKING, COOKING, BRUSHING TEETH, WASHING READY TO EAT FOODS, AND WASHING DISHES.
• Store water in sanitary containers and keep refrigerated.
OTHER METHODS OF TREATING YOUR WATER
• CHLORINE: Household bleach (5%): Add 2 drops per liter and let stand for 30 minutes. If water is cloudy or cold add 4 drops per liter.
• IODINE/CHLORINE TABLETS: see manufacturer’s directions.
• Note: Most household Brita type water filters will NOT remove microbial contaminates.
WHAT HAPPENED? WHAT IS BEING DONE?
The water distribution system was breached at the reservoir. We are in consultation with the Fraser health Authority to investigate and resolve this issue. We are currently in the process of disinfecting the reservoir and continuing enhanced monitoring. In addition, we are evaluating all available information and conducting tests to confirm the extent of the contamination of the system. We will inform when the problem has been corrected and tests show no bacteria and you no longer need to boil your water. We anticipate resolving the problem quickly.
Additionally, we are going to flush chlorinated water throughout the system and this may cause taste, odor and aesthetic concerns. Boiling your water will resolve these issues.
