of Botswana. Bordered by Gaborone City and South East District to the South; and Kweneng and Central Districts to the West and North respectively. Kgatleng shares an international border with South Africa (North West and Limpopo Provinces) to the East. Staff Compliment: 896

Historic Sites: Famous for Matsieng footprints which belong to a legendary giant and Tswana ancestor who emerged from the earth's centre with his people and animals to inhabit the world. The footprints lie imprinted on some rocks in a protected area just 3km north of Mochudi. There is also Phuthadikobo Museum. This museum is housed where it was formerly the Bakgatla National School and is named after the hill on which it is located. The Phuthadikobo museum was established in 1976 by Sandy Grant in conjunction with the local community and with the encouragement of Chief Linchwe II of the Bakgatla. It has the distinction of being the first district museum in the country. Nearest Towns/Villages: Gaborone – 50 km to the South. Molepolole – 110 km to the West. Mahalapye – 168km to the North. Brief history: Bakgatla- ba – ga – Kgafela, led by Kgosi Kgamanyane, migrated from the Transvaal Province (South Africa) around 1871, running away from the apartheid Boer oppression and slavery. They found Bakwena led by Kgosi Mochudi already settled around present day Mochudi village which is named after the Bakwena Kgosi. They fought and defeated Bakwena who as a result moved to their current tribal territory. Other tribes indicated above later moved in and peacefully settled among Bakgatla. Economy: Subsistent agriculture (arable and pastoral), design and manufacture of mining equipment (drill rigs); service and public sector employment form the economic development base. Emerging coal and power generation for local consumption and export are expected to take off soon. As our district embodies the richness of Botswana’s history, it could easily become an attractive tourist destination. With a well-functioning museum and hills of historical significance, the district stands a good chance of becoming a tourist destination. Other potential business opportunities are: tannery, fisheries, piggery and beekeeping. Website: www.kgatlengdc.gov.bw

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE IKAGENG PROGRAM STARTS IN EARNERST

Kgatleng District Council brought together Village Development Committees across the district for an update on the implementation plan of the Ikageng program. The Chief Public Health Officer Mr Luke Motlhatlhedi stated that the objective of the meeting was to address issues of responsibility and communication in relation to the program. He said it was crucial for all stakeholders to understand the program for ease of alignment and smooth implementation in a well co-ordinated way without fragmentation. Officers took time to explain to the VDC members all changes made for Ikageng from Ipelegeng and discussed projects that will be undertaken through the program in their various wards.
The attendants were encouraged to tap into the new program, in order to gain knowledge on project implementation given the responsibility of coordination and supervision that the program comes with. They were advised to work in unity to avoid division as well as to run along with the same vision for ease of implementing the 2026/2027 projects.
The VDCS’ will be working collaboratively with Public Health, Social and Community Development, Roads and Buildings Offices.
