The North - East District Council (NEDC) will conduct further Village Development Committee (VDC) elections in selected villages on the 4th August 2026.

The Northern Cluster Councils, comprising of North East District Council, Francistown City Council, Tonota District Council, Tutume District Council, and Sowa Town Council, officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 31 July 2026, marking the beginning of a twinning partnership for mutual cooperation.

The historic signing signifies a shared commitment by the five councils to foster stronger collaboration in pursuit of improved local governance and sustainable development. The partnership provides a platform for the councils to work together in strengthening institutional capacity, enhancing service delivery, promoting good governance, and advancing socio-economic development across the Northern Cluster.

Officiating at the signing ceremony, His Worship, the Mayor of the City of Francistown Council, Gaone Majere described the occasion as a significant milestone in the councils' journey towards greater collaboration. He noted that the Memorandum of Understanding demonstrates the collective resolve of the Northern Cluster Councils to build strong partnerships that will contribute to improved performance and service delivery.

Hon. Majere stated that the MoU establishes a framework for cooperation in key areas of mutual interest, including the exchange of knowledge, skills, expertise, and best practices in local governance, strategic planning, financial management, infrastructure development, service delivery, and community development. He further emphasized that through collaboration, the councils will be better positioned to address common challenges, improve operational efficiency, and implement innovative initiatives that will positively impact the lives of the communities they serve.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding marks the beginning of a new chapter of regional cooperation, reinforcing the Northern Cluster Councils' commitment to working together in delivering responsive, efficient, and people-centred local government services for the benefit of Batswana.
