With a mission to promote and safeguard of human rights not excluding anyone and leaving no one behind, UNICEF recently donated learning kits to Gothibamang Primary School with an aim to accelerate Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Special Education by building foundational cognitive skills in addition to bridging the educational equity gap for lifelong learning.

By providing tangible resources like age-appropriate blocks, books, puzzles, and art supplies included in the 25 learning kits, the donation will transform passive observation into active, play-based learning across the 4 schools being Takatokwane, Monwane, Salajwe and Gothibamang Primary school. This foundational support from UNICEF will vastly improve school readiness and create long-term academic benefits that ripple across the entire education ecosystem

Dr. Delic Sehunwe, Deputy Council Secretary for Operations, spoke at the event, which was themed 'Every Child Counts: Advancing inclusive ECD and Quality Learning' and was well aligned with the country's commitment to inclusive education as well as UNICEF's focus on equity, child rights, and quality education. With a focus on Sustainable Development Goals 4 (SDG4), Dr. Sehunwe stated that the donation will strengthen the capacity of our district's special education and ECD programs, making a difference in the district's inclusive education while also strengthening our partnership with UNICEF, which she stated has always supported our district.

As the session progressed, Samuel Phiri, a deputy UNICEF representative, praised Letlhakeng District Council for prioritising ECD and basing its approach on the national Mpepu program, which has similar views to UNICEF. Phiri acknowledged that despite the district's severe socioeconomic problems, restricted access to education, and lack of resources, the council actively leads multi-sectoral partnerships to support children's holistic development.

From efforts made by Letlhakeng District Council on ECD, Phiri further urged the district through its campaigns and activities that champions ECD siting that they deserve recognition, documentation and replication for its discovery on what works for children to the whole country.
Phiri noted that investing in ECD is smart economics and that it is an investment in human capital, economic growth, and national development. He stated that the district's use of play groups to provide services to the rural population demonstrated a commitment to inclusive education as the council recognises that a child's geography should not dictate their destiny. โ€˜A commitment of UNICEF and the government of Botswana is that every child thrives through inclusive education,โ€™ said Phiri.

The Education Chairperson, Tshokodiso Raselepe, expressed his gratitude for the donation, emphasising that it will greatly benefit students, particularly the Special Unit, which has long had the necessary tools to support children with special needs. He urged everyone to educate parents, who are the main stakeholders, about exceptional children. He pleaded, "Let's take care of special children one school at a time." He also urged everyone to make thoughtful choices so that we might succeed in obtaining resources that facilitate assessment for admittance into special classes.

As the quest to build the Letlhakeng District Council Strategy intensifies, the political wing was bidden to participate in its creation with a common goal of improving service delivery, supporting local economic development, and harmonising with national objectives.

Given the current economic climate, this strategic planning is to assist the council in dealing with restricted finances and expanding community demands while remaining on the grid.

Letlhakeng District Council, as a local authority, does not exist in a vacuum. Consequently, the strategy that is being devised must be in accordance with the broader national development policies and decentralisation strategies.

The workshop was designed to facilitate the exchange of ideas between councillors and council administrators in order to enhance economic activity at the village level, thereby achieving improved sustenance for households and the creation of employment.

This, it was asserted, arises from the enhancement of understanding of organisational strategic principles, mission, vision, and established values implemented through the framework. The annual performance plan, which is in line with the current government's human rights-based strategy and feeds on the national goal, was also considered for appreciation during the workshop.

At the conclusion, suggestions for the council's strategic plan were discussed, and local efforts were valued with a shared understanding of the pressing need to support and improve the standard of living for the Letlhakeng community.

Botswana's National Primary School Feeding Programme serves over 400,000 students and has developed into a strong mechanism for child nutrition and education over the course of over six decades. The program which is managed is managed by District Councils with a heavy reliance on institutional food handlers giving them strong expectations to adhere to.

With this background, Letlhakeng District Council through Education Department recently conducted a workshop for the food handlers with an aim to enhancing their knowledge on food safety, hygiene, and meal preparation. In facilitation was Environmental Health Department to ensure compliance with national public health regulations. They lower the risk of foodborne infections among pupils.

The session reinforced that clean and structured food handling in schools is an important cornerstone for Early Childhood Development (ECD) and directly supports the strategic pillars of the newly founded Mpepu Program. As a result, instructor Tumelo Kgotlaetsile stated that by overseeing how food is sourced, prepared, and provided to reception-class and all primary school students, the council safeguards young children from cognitive and physical setbacks while strengthening comprehensive care systems.

Kgotlaetsile further demonstrated that proper food handling significantly shapes developmental results of learners during their foundational years by preventing stunted growth and cognitive disabilities as well as boosting classroom retention and learning outcomes. Additionally, in impoverished areas like Letlhakeng District, it aids in mitigating vulnerability in underserved communities as children in rural areas rely heavily on the National Primary School Feeding Programme.

He then emphasised the need for strong food safety measures to protect these vulnerable groups from foodborne diseases by ensuring the school environment serves as a reliable refuge for physical development

In Botswana, the right to identification is a fundamental human right that allows children to receive essential services such as healthcare, education, and social protection. However, Letlhakeng District has historically had severe challenges, frequently ranking among the regions with the lowest birth registration rates in the country.

This prompted the Letlhakeng District Council, in partnership with the Department of Civil and Nation Registration, to launch the "Right to Identity Campaign".

The right to identity is a fundamental human right for all children, as outlined by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
