Peace Corps Botswana

Peace Corps Botswana Mission
In 1961, President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote world peace
and friendship. The Peace Corps' mission has three simple goals:
1.

Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men
and women;
2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples
served; and
3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of
Americans. Description
The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the Un

iversity of Michigan to serve their country in the
cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew
an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, 200,000+ Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 139 host countries to
work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and
environmental preservation. Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas
such as information technology and business development, and contributing to the
President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help
countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and
their communities. Visit Peace Corps on Facebook for more news and information. General Information

Did you know volunteers have access to monthly well-being check-ins through the Peer Support Network? Congratulations to our new PSN team members, Ariana, Joel, and Krishan, who are taking the baton from current team leaders, Connor, John, and Kristin. Together, they will support incoming volunteers as they adjust to their new living and working environment.

Peace Corps Response Volunteers begins their service journey in Botswana. 🇧🇼

✨Earlier this May, we proudly welcomed 8 Community Economic Development Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) as they start on a 1 year of service across Botswana. Partnering with Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs and civil society organizations, the Volunteers will support work around digital literacy, entrepreneurship, business development and help in strengthening local capacity and sustainability in communities.

The PCRVs participated in an intensive orientation, including programming related, community integration, Setswana and cross-cultural learning to prepare themselves to live and work alongside their host organizations and communities. 🌍

Here is a glimpse of some of the big moments in their orientation.

Site Announcement – the exciting moment volunteers learned where they will serve across Botswana.
Special Luncheon – a warm welcome and words of encouragement from the U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires Chris Gunning.
Swearing-In Ceremony – officially sworn in by Country Director Obie Shaw, with reflections on resilience, service, and commitment from fellow PCRV Kim.

With only a few days at site, we eagerly wait to hear the success stories of these 8 PCRVs and wish them well on their Peace Corps journey.

Bring your Child to Work Day.
Our office space was filled with laughter and bright🌸✨ young smiles as we hosted Bring Your Child to Work Day. A special opportunity for children to step into their parents’ world to see what it means supporting Volunteers and communities. 🌍

🌎 Happy Earth Day 🌍

Today, we wanted to spotlight an invaluable asset of Botswana: its natural beauty. One place you can appreciate this side of Botswana is Lekhubu, also known as Kubu Island. Lekhubu, which means jutting rock in Setswana, is a two-billion-year-old granite rock island located in the Sua Pan of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, one of the world’s largest salt pan complexes. The pans are the remnants of Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake that was somewhere between 30,888 and 106,178 sq mi, which finished drying over 10,000 years ago. Covered in baobab trees and surrounded by a vast playa, Lekbubu is an irrefutable piece of history and a sliver of quiet in an ever chaotic world.
