Botswana Defence Force (BDF) will join hands with Namibia Defence Force (NDF) for Exercise Tshwaragano III, scheduled for August 30 to September 11 in Lobatse.

The bilateral exercise, conducted under the theme “Enhancing Joint Cooperation – Ubuntu in Arms,” is aimed at strengthening the military relationship between Botswana and Namibia through joint training, knowledge sharing and improving the ability of the two forces to operate together.

The BDF has warned motorists to expect increased movement of military convoys during the training period, especially along the Gaborone-Lobatse A1 road and the Trans-Kalahari Highway from Mamuno Border Gate to Lobatse.

The public has been urged to exercise caution around military vehicles and comply with instructions from security personnel.

The BDF said the exercises reflect Botswana’s continued commitment to building defence partnerships and contributing towards peace and stability in the region.

The Kgosimotho family of Lekgwapeng Ward in Molepolole now has a new roof over their heads, thanks to a collaborative housing initiative led by the Department of Building Maintenance and the Department of Road Transport Sevices in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

The newly built, well-furnished two-bedroomed house was officially handed over during a glamorous ceremony attended by relatives, neighbors, and well-wishers.

Officiating the handover today, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s Corporate Services Deputy Permanent Secretary, Agnes Mothobi said shelter is a basic human need that is essential for restoring human dignity and respect.

The project was initiated after a devastating fire last year gutted the family’s previous home.

The blaze destroyed all of Khumo Kgosimotho’s belongings including her sewing machines.

Mma Kgosimotho, a local tailor lost her entire livelihood in the fire and appealed to good Samaritans for assistance to replace her equipment.

Speaking at the event, the Acting Director of the Department of Building Maintenance, Lorato Ditiro- said the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s vision of providing sustainable infrastructure for citizens.

She expressed gratitude to stakeholders and private companies that answered the call to partner on the project.

Among the contributors was Molepolole Wildlife Office, whose staff raised funds internally and worked with local police to secure donations.

The office cited a scriptural motivation to show love and support to the community.

An elated Mma Kgosimotho hailed the Ministry employees as “messengers of the living God” and urged members of the public to always heed the call to help those in need.

As the world’s eyes remain fixed on developments both locally and internationally, one constant in the Trans Kalahari Railway (TKR) Project has been the dedication and professionalism of the Project Management team.

At the forefront is Abel Matobo ( right on photo), an Engineer and a Project Management Officer from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure - Botswana, whose role in both Windhoek and Gaborone has been a reassuring signal of the project’s momentum and seriousness.

Abel is known for his impeccable professionalism, trademark smile and fierce commitment to project delivery.

As team player with the project team in Windhoek, he brings an insatiable appetite for results and value-driven leadership that contributes directly to goal achievement and operational efficiency.

This is clearly reflected in the manner in which he executes his duties within the Trans Kalahari Railway Project Management Office.

Speaking on the project, he has described the TKR as a development of the highest standard, designed to ensure interoperability and safety across the corridor from the port of Walvis Bay in Namibia.

He highlighted the project’s unique position to deliver transformative solutions that will improve regional connectivity and enhance economic growth for both Botswana and Namibia, and the wider Southern African region.

“Our ongoing collaboration as Botswana and Namibia demonstrates how strong bilateral relationships can deliver real change for our people," Abel concluded.

Earlier today, the leadership of Moshupa District Council led by Hon. Peter Sethibe met with the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Hon. Noah Salakae to discuss the road network challenges in Moshupa District.

The district has a total road network of 410km.

Key updates shared include that the 35km Kanye Circle to Goo Kodisa road, currently under OPRC, while 17.3km Moshupa to Manyana road is under construction.

The Ranaka to Mogobane and Moshupa to Letlhakane West roads are in good condition following previous works.

Mogonye Access road is past its design life and is in poor condition requiring reconstruction or rehabilitation.

Mmankgodi to Manyana section forms part of the broader Moshupa to Manyana rehabilitation project.

Other roads including Moshupa to Ralekgetho, Ralekgetho to Naledi, Manyana to Fikeng, Moatle to Pitseng, Lotlhakane West to Moshana and Tshweneyagae to Kgomokasitwa require various interventions such as spot improvements, regravelling, drift reconstruction and restoration of the sand cushion layer.

The main challenges raised are that all gravel roads in the district have lost gravel and require regravelling and that poor drainage continues to cause erosion and ponding.

In addition, only one grader services both Moshupa and Kanye Districts and it has been out of service since November 2024, which has affected routine maintenance.

In-house crews continue to carry out pothole patching.

To address these, the District and Ministry agreed on the need for urgent repair of the grader and the procurement of additional earthmoving equipment to improve response and clear maintenance backlogs.

The meeting concluded with appreciation for ongoing Road projects and a shared commitment to improve road infrastructure and maintenance in Moshupa District.

Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is actively engaging international investors to develop strategic rail corridors that will drive Botswana’s economic growth and regional integration.

This morning, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Hon Noah Salakae together with some members of the Botswana Railways Board, met with prospective investors for discussions aimed at unlocking the full potential of the Mosetse to Kazungula to Livingstone Railway.

The corridor is recognized as one of Southern Africa’s most strategic economic routes.

It stands at the heart of Botswana’s shared ambition with Zambia to enhance connectivity, facilitate trade and promote sustainable development across the region.
