🚀 Driving Sustainable Growth in SADC!

The EU Delegation to Botswana and SADC was proud to join the 9th SADC Sustainable Industrialisation Week in Durban (27–31 July 2026)—a key platform for policymakers, investors, and innovators shaping the future of industrialisation, trade, and economic transformation in Southern Africa.

This year’s theme: "Resilient, Sustainable and Inclusive Industrialisation through Infrastructure, Agriculture & Critical Minerals Transformation", aligns perfectly with the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy, which is facilitating trade flows and boosting decent job creation, and sustainable economic development across SADC.

💡 How? Through initiatives like the EUR 25M EU-funded Africa Trade Competitiveness & Market Access (ATCMA) Programme, we are strengthening trade, competitiveness, and market access for SADC businesses, as well as promoting regional value chains.

📢 Key Moment: On 29 July, we co-chaired the ATCMA Programme Steering Committee, pushing for faster implementation to unlock more opportunities for the region.

🌍 Together with our SADC partners are building a just, sustainable, and prosperous future for the region!

Every year, thousands of people accept what they believe are legitimate job offers, only to find themselves trapped in scam compounds, stripped of their freedom and forced into cyber-enabled fraud.

📱 This is the dark reality of human trafficking in the digital age.

Criminal networks are exploiting deception to trick jobseekers and force them into cybercrime.

On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 🌐, the European Union is standing firm. We are strengthening international cooperation, supporting survivors, and cracking down on the criminal networks behind these atrocities, including a proposed new EU sanctions regime specifically targeting organised crime.

Together with UNODC - United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime 🇺🇳, we are working relentlessly to uncover these operations, protect victims, and hold traffickers to account.

🇪🇺 🇺🇦 Stand with Ukraine

As winter sets in here in Botswana, we are starkly reminded of the severe consequences of Russia’s relentless attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure, a blatant violation of international law.

◾️ 247 energy workers killed
◾️ Over 900 strikes on the national electricity operator
◾️ 9 GW of generating capacity damaged
◾️ Millions of Ukrainians left without electricity

These numbers represent families struggling to survive harsh winter conditions without access to reliable heating, electricity, or essential services. The European Union and its Member States have stood with Ukraine through every winter of the war, providing emergency support to keep cities lit and homes warm.

Ukraine needs our solidarity and support more than ever.

Today, we mark the EU Day for the Victims of the Global Climate Crisis.

Established in 2023, this annual day honours those in Europe and around the world who have lost their lives or have seen their health, homes and livelihoods affected by the impacts of climate change.

As extreme weather events become more frequent and more intense, this day is a reminder that climate change is not a distant threat - it is already affecting communities across the globe.

It is also a call to action. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening climate resilience, we can help protect lives, communities and future generations from the growing risks of climate change.

Today, we remember the victims. And we reaffirm our commitment to building a safer, more resilient future.
