The Executive Secretary, His Excellency Elias M. Magosi, participated in the High-Level Meeting on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, held on 23 September 2026 on the margins of the 81st Session of the UN-General Assembly in New York, USA.
The high-level meeting was hosted by the United Republic of Tanzania, a Member State, in collaboration with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa ). The meeting was convened under the leadership of Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania and African Union Champion for Maternal and Child Health, who was represented by His Excellency Dr. Deogratius Ndejembi, Vice-President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
The meeting highlighted the urgent need for stronger collective action to reduce preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths across the continent.
Maternal, newborn and child health is central to Africaโs development and prosperity. Protecting the lives and well-being of mothers and children requires resilient health systems, sustainable financing, equitable access to quality healthcare and stronger partnerships at national, regional and continental levels.
The meeting was also addressed by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization ( ), alongside other partners who reaffirmed their support for African-led efforts to improve maternal, newborn and child health.
โs participation in the meeting reinforces the Regionโs commitment to ensuring that no woman or child is left behind and to advancing healthier communities as a foundation for sustainable development across Southern Africa.
