BOTSWANA AND COPENHAGEN CONSENSUS CENTER STRENGTHEN COOPERATION ON EVIDENCE-BASED POLICYMAKING

On 22 September 2026, the Minister of International Relations of the Republic of Botswana, Honourable Dr. Phenyo Butale, met with Dr. Bjørn Lomborg, President of the Copenhagen Consensus Center (CCC), on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The CCC is an international research organisation that assesses the costs and benefits of policy interventions to support informed decision-making and the effective use of development resources.

The meeting discussed Botswana's engagement with the CCC and the role of evidence-based research and cost-benefit analysis in development planning and public policy. The two sides explored ways to further strengthen cooperation in support of Botswana's national development priorities, including by applying evidence-based approaches to planning and policy formulation.

Dr. Lomborg reaffirmed the Centre's interest in supporting Botswana's development efforts and in maintaining engagement with the relevant national planning institutions.

BOTSWANA AND MOROCCO DEEPEN BILATERAL TIES AT UNGA81

On 22 September 2026, the Minister of International Relations of the Republic of Botswana, Honourable Dr. Phenyo Butale, met with H.E. Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates of the Kingdom of Morocco, on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting focused on strengthening relations between Botswana and Morocco and advancing practical cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including mining, agriculture and education.

The two Ministers also discussed strengthening the institutional framework for bilateral cooperation, including enhanced political consultations and arrangements on diplomatic and official travel, as well as taxation. These efforts aim to deepen relations and promote mutually beneficial partnerships between the two countries.

PRESS RELEASE - BOTSWANA AND MOZAMBIQUE HOLD THE NINTH SESSION OF THE JOINT PERMANENT COMMISSION ON COOPERATION

GABORONE, 23rd September 2026: The Ninth (9th) Session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation between the Republic of Botswana and the Republic of Mozambique, will take place from 23rd to 25th September 2026, in Gaborone. Botswana and Mozambique established diplomatic relations in 1975 and have since maintained strong bonds of friendship and close historical ties.

This Session of the JPCC follows the 8th Session held in July 2024, in Maputo, Mozambique. The 9th Session will provide an important platform for the two countries to review progress in bilateral cooperation and identify new areas of collaboration in a number of sectors including, trade and investment, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, conservation, education, ICT, defence and security.

As Botswana continues to pursue economic diversification, Mozambique remains an important partner, particularly in advancing trade, connectivity and regional integration. It is expected that several bilateral agreements will be signed during the JPCC, further strengthening the institutional framework for cooperation between the two countries.

The 9th Session of the Botswana-Mozambique JPCC comes ahead of the State Visit to Botswana by His Excellency Mr. Daniel Francisco Chapo, President of the Republic of Mozambique, scheduled from 28th September 2026 to 30th September 2026. President Chapo will also be the Guest of Honour as Botswana commemorates the 60th Anniversary of Independence on 30th September 2026. He will be accompanied by the First Lady of the Republic of Mozambique, Mrs Gueta Selemane Chapo, Honourable Cabinet Ministers, and other Senior Government Officials.

Convened by H.E. President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, the session marked one year of the Accra Reset and launched the report “A Sovereign Future for Health”, a call for a new global bargain anchored on ownership, control and accountability in development.
