On Friday the 24th July, 2026, His Excellency Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the African Union, paid a courtesy call on the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Hon. Justice Barnabas Nyamadzabo.
During the meeting, His Excellency Ambassador Bankole Adeoye congratulated the Independent Electoral Commission for making both Botswana and Africa proud by delivering free, fair, credible and transparent General Elections in October 2024. The Ambassador also expressed his happiness and appreciation that the elections were held in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Botswana. This he said, was critical because despite decades of democracy in Africa, many countries still struggle to have free, fair and transparent polls, and seamless transfer of power.
In his response, the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Hon. Justice Barnabas Nyamadzabo, thanked the African Union for recognizing the Commissionโs efforts. He highlighted the need for transparency, impartiality, strict adherence to the law, and robust stakeholder engagement in electoral management. The Chairman emphasized on the Commissionโs commitment to these principles.
In his remarks, the Secretary to the Independent Electoral Commission, Mr. Jefferson Siamisang, emphasized on the need for continuous learning and improvement in electoral management. He indicated that learnings drawn from the General Elections in 2024 will be used to perfect preparatory processes for the General Elections in 2029.
