AFRICAN HERO AFRICA PAYS COURTESY CALL ON THE MAYOR

Chief Executive Officer and Botswana Country Manager of African Hero Africa, Mr Akash Singh, paid a courtesy call on His Worship the Mayor, Oarabile Motlaleng, to discuss the upcoming handover of the newly constructed Block 7 Clinic and Primary School, as well as exchange views on future development initiatives that will support the City's growth agenda.

Welcoming Mr Singh, His Worship expressed appreciation for the courtesy call and the opportunity to engage on matters of mutual interest. He noted that the upcoming handover of the two facilities will make a meaningful contribution to improving access to quality healthcare and education, while enhancing public service delivery for residents. The Mayor further underscored the importance of development initiatives that create employment opportunities, particularly for the youth, and encouraged continued collaboration with the City's technical teams to identify innovative solutions that will advance the City's development priorities.

Speaking during the engagement, Mr Singh reaffirmed African Hero Africa's commitment to supporting Botswana's development through strategic investment initiatives. He highlighted the organisation's ongoing establishment of a technical academy that will equip Batswana with specialised skills and create employment opportunities in future projects. He further noted that the organisation's broader initiatives are aimed at strengthening Botswana's economic competitiveness and positioning the country to benefit from emerging opportunities within Africa's growing financial landscape.

Mr Singh also reaffirmed that the Block 7 Clinic and Primary School, which are scheduled for handover in September, have been constructed to the highest quality and infrastructure standards, reflecting African Hero Africa's commitment to supporting improved public service delivery and community development.

Deputy Town Clerk Mr Letswalo Moesi and Chief Architecture and Building Services Officer Mr Thuso Mazebedi were also in attendance.

INERCA DONATES TO BH3 CLINIC

Gaborone City Council (GCC) received a donation of essential baby care items from INERCA for Broadhurst 3 (BH3) Clinic.

Speaking during the handover, Mr. Tirelo Tshukudu, Managing Director of Inescapable Refined Insurance Solutions, said the initiative demonstrates the company's dedication to making a positive impact in the community through its corporate social responsibility programme. He noted that by donating essential baby care items, the company hopes to support BH3 Clinic in providing quality care and ensuring that mothers and their newborns have access to basic necessities during the early stages of life.

The donation comprised blankets, sheets, rompers, fleece blankets, receiving blankets, socks, baby beanies, baby clothes, pampers and other newborn essentials.

The donation was received by Kgosi Segametsi P**e, Honourable Councillors Meshack Kebeileng, Councillor Peter Chicho, Councillor Kesaobaka Bantatetse, Public Health Specialist Dr Kebayaone Gare and BH3 facility manager Ms Kgalalelo Kabafe.

GCC RAISES AWARENESS ON BREASTFEEDING

As part of the World Breastfeeding Week commemorations, Gaborone City Council (GCC) conducted a breastfeeding awareness campaign at the BBS Post Office to educate members of the public on the importance of breastfeeding and maternal nutrition.

Health officials engaged the public on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a baby's life, while also addressing common breastfeeding challenges and providing practical guidance to mothers and caregivers.

The campaign further encouraged families, employers and communities to create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers, highlighting the vital role breastfeeding plays in improving the health, growth and well-being of both mothers and children.

The awareness campaign forms part of a series of activities leading up to the main World Breastfeeding Week commemoration, which will be held on 7 August 2026 at Block 9 Park.

GABORONE CITY COUNCIL TO COMMEMORATE WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK

Gaborone City Council (GCC) will commemorate World Breastfeeding Week with a public event on Friday, 7 August 2026, at Block 9 Park.

As part of the build-up to the commemoration, GCC today launched an outreach programme at BBS Post Office, where healthcare professionals are engaging members of the public on the importance of breastfeeding, maternal nutrition, and optimal infant feeding practices.

The outreach aims to raise awareness about the life-saving benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child's life while promoting continued breastfeeding alongside appropriate complementary feeding.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the main commemoration on 7 August 2026 at Block 9 Park , where a range of health education activities, demonstrations, and family-focused engagements will be held in support of mothers, infants, and caregivers.

GCC INTENSIFIES ENFORCEMENT AGAINST NON-COMPLIANT FOOD BUSINESSES

• Craft Meats Charged Again for Food Safety Violations
• Heavy Penalties for Unauthorised Reopening

The Gaborone City Council (GCC) has noted with concern that some food establishments that have been temporarily closed for public health violations continue to operate in blatant disregard of closure orders issued by the Council.

Such actions constitute serious breaches of the Public Health Act and the Food Control Act and pose significant risks to public health and consumer safety. GCC wishes to remind all business operators that failure to comply with closure directives will result in firm legal action, including prosecution, substantial fines, and other penalties prescribed by law.

In addition, any food products or inventory found to be contaminated, unsafe, or otherwise non-compliant with food safety regulations are liable to immediate seizure and destruction, as was the case during the recent enforcement action against Craft Meats.

IDM STUDENTS DONATE DUST BINS TO PROMOTE CLEANER COMMUNITIES

Gaborone City Council (GCC), in partnership with Somarela Tikologo and Public Health students from IDM College, held a Litter-Picking Campaign under the theme "Building Healthier Communities for a Better Tomorrow." As part of the initiative, IDM College Public Health students donated dust bins to the community to encourage proper waste disposal and promote sustainable waste management practices.

Ms. Dorcus Sethole, Chief Technical Officer for Health Promotion and Education Gaborone City Council, commended the IDM Public Health students for initiating the campaign and working alongside partners to promote proper waste management and environmental stewardship. She noted that litter poses significant health risks by contributing to diseases and environmental degradation, urging the public to dispose of waste responsibly to protect both the environment and public health. Ms Sethole also thanked all participants in the campaign, stressing the importance of community involvement in maintaining clean environments and encouraging residents to continue supporting environmental initiatives.

For his part, Mr. Boniface Olubayo, Tikologo Zero Waste Coordinator, highlighted the importance of litter picking as an inclusive activity that invites participation from individuals of all ages and backgrounds. He encouraged residents to take part in the monthly National clean-up campaigns, which are scheduled for the second Saturday of each month, emphasizing that this initiative promotes volunteerism and leads to cleaner, healthier communities.

The Public Health students were recognized for their leadership in the campaign, demonstrating their commitment to applying classroom knowledge in practical situations while raising awareness about environmental responsibility.

This campaign reinforced the significance of partnerships and community engagement in creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Gaborone.
