LEA Supports Growth and Knowledge Sharing in Indigenous Poultry Production
The Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) was proud to participate as a sectoral partner at the inaugural Indigenous Chicken Production Knowledge Summit, held at the Stanbic Bank Botswana Incubator in Gaborone. The summit brought together farmers, industry experts, financiers, government institutions, feed suppliers, technology providers, and other stakeholders across the indigenous poultry value chain to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and explore opportunities for sector growth and collaboration.
A key highlight of the event was hearing from Mr. Obotseng Mokenti Raborokgwe, owner of Mokoko le Moroba, a successful commercial indigenous poultry enterprise in Ruretse and a valued LEA client from the Pilane Office. Specialising in Tswana, Sussex, Australorp, Rhode Island Red, Potchefstroom Koekoek, Venda, and Boschveld breeds, the farm maintains a stock of over 300 birds and produces approximately 2,000 chicks per month for the market. Introduced as a successful indigenous poultry farmer by Programme Director Cindy Sean, Mr. Raborokgwe candidly shared the lessons he learned from setbacks and challenges, emphasizing the importance of proper breed selection, effective production systems, record keeping, and avoiding common pitfalls such as overcrowding and poor farm management.
The summit featured valuable insights from a range of experts. Mr. Disang Nage, Head of Corporate Affairs at CEDA, highlighted the recently launched CEDA Poultry Suite, stressing that business success requires more than access to finance. He underscored the importance of sound husbandry practices, business development support, quality standards, research, stakeholder collaboration, and professional extension services. He also encouraged Batswana to proudly support local products and celebrate the value of indigenous poultry.
Participants also benefited from technical presentations on poultry health, biosecurity, vaccination and disease management by Dr. James Machete, as well as expert guidance on poultry nutrition and feed quality from Techno Feeds. Additional sessions explored opportunities in poultry processing and value addition beyond live bird sales, digital payment solutions, sustainability programmes, and modern farm management technologies.
Representing LEA, Lovvy Moriah-Otimile, Branch Manager of LEA Pilane, delivered a practical and informative presentation on record keeping and farm management. She emphasized the importance of maintaining accurate business and production records, demonstrated how farmers can leverage LEA platforms and services, and highlighted how proper record management enables informed decision-making and business growth.
The summit also featured engaging panel discussions involving industry leaders, poultry producers, government officials, financiers, and business development experts, creating a platform for meaningful dialogue on opportunities and challenges within the indigenous poultry sector.
