Botswana is preparing to assume the 2028 Chairmanship of the Kimberley Process, with a focus on building a stronger, better-resourced and more effective Secretariat.

Through engagement with UNECA (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa) and international partners, Botswana is seeking technical support, skills development and resource mobilisation to strengthen the Kimberley Process Secretariat and advance the sustainability of the global diamond industry.

The country remains committed to partnerships that support a resilient, responsible and sustainable diamond sector.

Twenty-two officers are participating in a one‑week Rooftop Solar Practitioner Training at Maun Technical College from 21–26 September 2026.

The programme, which blends theory with hands‑on practice, is being conducted under the Rooftop Solar Trainer of Trainers initiative by the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA), and the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) with funding support from the European Union’s ASPIRE Programme.

The initiative is designed to strengthen Botswana’s technical capacity and accelerate the rollout of the revised Rooftop Solar Programme, which empowers consumers to generate their own electricity and feed surplus power into the national grid.

Participants will conclude the training with certification on Saturday, 26 September 2026, marking another milestone in Botswana’s drive toward a cleaner, more reliable energy future.

𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘂𝗻

The Ministry of Minerals and Energy through the Department of Energy together with Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA), hosted a two-day Rooftop Solar and Energy Efficiency Awareness Workshop for facility managers on the 23–24 September 2026 at Maun Technical College under the EU-funded ASPIRE initiative.

The workshop brought together 60 participants from Government Ministries, Departments and State-Owned Enterprises to strengthen their knowledge of energy efficiency, energy conservation and rooftop solar PV technologies.

In her remarks, Ms. Omphile Mogorosi, Assistant District Commissioner for the North West District, expressed gratitude to the organisers of the workshop and encouraged participants to use the opportunity to learn, gain knowledge and apply it meaningfully in their workplaces.

Energy efficiency helps reduce consumption and operational costs, while rooftop solar provides a clean and sustainable energy solution.

The University of Botswana’s SOLTRAIN Project also made a presentation, sensitising participants on the benefits and opportunities of solar energy and the role of renewable energy in supporting Botswana’s transition towards a more sustainable and energy-secure future.

Minister of Minerals and Energy, Hon. Bogolo Joy Kenewendo has called for Africa to move beyond resource extraction and focus on creating value through energy, critical minerals, technology and industrialisation.

Speaking at the Unstoppable Africa 2026 dialogue under the theme “𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒉𝒊𝒇𝒕 – 𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝑩𝒆 𝑨𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂’𝒔 𝑵𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝑬𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚 𝑮𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔?” in New York, the Minister highlighted Botswana’s ambition to transform energy into a platform for economic diversification and industrial development.

She outlined Botswana’s strategic focus on five key pillars:
𝑹𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒘𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑬𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏: Scaling up green energy projects with increased private sector participation to ensure a sustainable power mix.
𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑩𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: Moving up the value chain by processing minerals locally rather than exporting raw materials.
𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑽𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔: Leveraging Botswana’s wealth of critical minerals to anchor new manufacturing and industrial sectors.
𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑰𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: Integrating artificial intelligence and smart electricity networks to modernise the national and regional power infrastructure.
𝑹𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: Strengthening cross-border electricity trade and energy partnerships within the African continent.

The Minister emphasised that Africa’s energy transition must be defined by reliability, affordability, sustainability and inclusivity. She issued a call for global partnerships that bridge the gap between capital, technology, skills, infrastructure and market access.

Botswana reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with international investors, governments, technology providers, and development institutions to build robust energy and industrial value chains that will drive long-term economic transformation across Africa.

Botswana through the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, is stepping up efforts to build public confidence in rooftop solar as the country continues to expand renewable energy and strengthen local technical skills.

Speaking at the official opening of Energy Week at Maun Technical College on Monday 21 September 2026, Department of Energy Acting Director Ms Tebogo Selaelo said the country had received 1,077 rooftop solar applications by the end of July 2026. Of these, 876 had been approved, while 455 systems had already been installed and commissioned, adding 31 MW to Botswana’s energy mix.

Despite the progress, Ms Selaelo said household participation remained low, with uptake below 30 percent. She attributed this in part to concerns among residents about the qualifications of solar installers.

“To address this concern, the government is reviewing the Rooftop Solar Programme and plans to establish a National Register of Certified Solar Installers by January 2027. Certified installers will receive verifiable Green Cards,” she said.

She added that the move is expected to give residents greater confidence when choosing installers and help strengthen standards within the growing solar industry.

The training taking place during Energy Week is supported through the ASPIRE initiative, a partnership between Botswana and the European Union. Rather than training installers directly, the programme is focused on developing instructors who can pass technical knowledge and skills on to others.

Maun has been designated as Botswana’s solar hub, with Government moving to equip local people with the skills needed to benefit from expected investment in the renewable energy sector.

Speaking at Energy Week at Maun Technical College yesterday – September 21 2026, Acting Director in the Department of Energy, Ms Tebogo Selaelo, said the decision to hold the programme in Maun was deliberate.

“We have designated Maun as the solar hub for Botswana,” Selaelo said.

She noted that the region is planned to host Botswana’s largest solar power plant, with a capacity of 500 megawatts, creating opportunities in construction, logistics, accommodation, supplies, operations and maintenance.

Selaelo said the training is aimed at ensuring that local youth are ready to take advantage of those opportunities.

“We have brought this training to Maun because we want Maun to be ready. When the opportunity arrives, the youth of this region must be in a position to seize it,” she said.

Rather than training installers directly, the programme is focusing on training instructors who can pass the skills on to many more artisans.

“If you train one installer, you create one skilled person. If you train one instructor, you create a source of skills that will produce hundreds of competent artisans every year, for years to come,” Selaelo said.

Rooftop Solar programme has already trained 39 senior instructors and inspectors from technical colleges, with 20 more undergoing training in Maun.

The initiative is being implemented under the ASPIRE Programme, a four-year partnership between Botswana and the European Union running to 2030. Mandate of the ASPIRE Programme in Botswana is to accelerate the country’s transition to a cleaner, more resilient, and sustainable energy sector through technical assistance.

Assistant District Commissioner for the North West District, Ms Omphile Mogorosi, highlighted the profound impact of the program on the community, stressing that empowering local professionals is essential for driving regional development.

She encouraged participants to seize the opportunity to network across key sector institutions, exchange knowledge, and refine their technical capabilities as Maun builds its green future.
