“When Botswana asked for help, the United States answered the call by responding to President Duma Gideon Boko’s request for critical medical commodities to address the public health emergency,” - Ambassador Howard Van Vranken.

The United States has delivered approximately $1 million (BWP 13.6 million) in life-saving health commodities to Botswana — including antiretroviral medicines for adults and children, lab reagents for early infant HIV diagnosis, and tuberculosis diagnostic kits.

Since October 2025, multiple shipments have arrived at the Central Medical Stores, Botswana, putting critical tools directly in the hands of those who need them most.

We were honored to mark this milestone alongside Minister Ketlhalefile F.C. Motshegwa and Gaborone Mayor, Oarabile Motlaleng at the official handover ceremony. BWgovernment BW Presidency

The U.S. Embassy in Gaborone is closed today, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth.

Even though slavery ended in the U.S. in 1863 some enslaved Black Americans didn’t get the message until two and a half years later. The message finally came on June 19,1865 in Galveston, Texas and was marked in future years with a celebration in Black communities referred to as “Juneteenth”.

On June 16, 2026, the United States announced more than $1 billion in humanitarian and disaster response assistance to UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP) through new global macro awards, which cover life-saving support in more than 40 countries including Botswana. This announcement builds directly on the tremendous success of the Trump Administration’s landmark December 2025 “Humanitarian Reset” memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
