SCHOOL EDUCATION AND AWARENESS ON SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS TO ADRESS ENVIRONMENTAL CAHALENGES- THE CASE OF TRANSBOUNDARY RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

We had the privilege of engaging with Environmental clubs- students in an interactive presentation focused on the role of OKACOM and the importance of transboundary water cooperation in managing shared river basins.

The sessions highlighted how cooperation among countries sharing the Cubango–Okavango River Basin helps to:

Protect vital ecosystems

Promote sustainable water use

Support livelihoods and climate resilience

Foster peace, collaboration, and shared responsibility

It was encouraging to see young and aspiring environmentalists actively engaging, asking thoughtful questions, and exploring how science, policy, and regional cooperation come together to safeguard our shared water resources for future generations.

Together, we are nurturing informed, empowered youth who understand that water knows no borders—and neither should our solutions.

The Permanent Okavango River Basin Water Commission (OKACOM) has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the CORB-FIT and intends to apply part of the proceeds for consulting services.

The consulting services (“the Services”) include operational support on environmental and social risk management within the PIU, ensuring that, the CORB Fund is established with appropriate E&S governance, systems, and procedures; and the project pipeline is developed, screened, and prioritized in a manner consistent with the ESF, applicable Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs), including those related to stakeholder engagement, labor, land, livelihoods, and cultural heritage, and relevant national and regional regulatory requirements. The contract of the E&S Specialist will be for three (3) years subject to renewal based on performance in satisfying the objective of this position or depending on material changes to project design or budget. The expected date of assignment is 1 July 20261

On 21 May 2026, OKACOM was proud to participate in EU Day, joining partners and stakeholders in celebrating collaboration, Cooperation and for sustainable development and share lessons learnt from the European Union programme for Transboundary Water Management in the Cubango Okavango River Basin (CORB). Our engagement highlighted the importance of both regional and international cooperation in shared water resources, environmental sustainability, and strengthening partnerships that support resilient communities, and water governance across the Cubango - Okavango River Basin.

At OKACOM We value the opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and reaffirm our commitment to transboundary cooperation for a sustainable future.

Development of the CORB Fund Brand Manual

The Cubango-Okavango River Basin Fund( CORB-Fund) with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), acting as an implementing agency of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is supporting the Governments of Angola, Botswana and Namibia through the Permanent Okavango River Basin Commission (OKACOM) in implementing a project by the CORB Fund titled “Calalyse investments into nature – positive outcomes” in the Cubango-Okavango River Basin. Seeks the services of qualified and reputable consultant/s to develop a brand identity for the CORB Fund to effectively package visibility materials that will be generated by the institution.


The branding will enhance awareness of the CORB Fund among critical stakeholders, including policymakers, the transboundary water resources management community, international cooperation partners, and the private sector. Further to this this initiative will also enable the Fund to be identifiable and align with co-branding principles outlined and required by principal funders/partners.

The Permanent Okavango River Basin Commission (OKACOM) today had the honour of hosting the new Ambassador of the Republic of Angola to Botswana His excellency Ambassador Sandro de Oliveira during a courtesy visit to its Secretariat.
The visit provided an opportunity to engage on shared priorities in the sustainable management and development of the Okavango River Basin, strengthening cooperation among the basin’s riparian states. Discussions highlighted the importance of transboundary collaboration, environmental sustainability, and regional integration for the benefit of communities in the CORB. The engagement also presented an opportunity for the Executive secretary to share benefits to communities in the CORB, through community-based livelihood projects; With the support of the UNDP-GEF and EU Projects support to Strategic Action Plan Implementation, several livelihoods' interventions have been carried out including:
Conservation Agriculture Practices in communities in the basin
Climate Smart Horticulture Produce with links to high-end tourist market (19Farmers supported in Botswana)
Community Fisheries Management plans with tools, equipment (boats) andcapacity development;
Community Tourism campsites as alternative livelihoods and private sectorpartnership arrangement – The Sikerete Campsite in Namibia;
Non-timber forest sustainable resource harvesting by communities including bee keeping
His excellency Ambassador Sandro de Oliveira acknowledged the good work that OKACOM has done and the more that needs to be done. He reiterated the Angolan embassy ‘s commitment for continued support to OKACOM. The OKACOM Executive Secretary indicated that he looks forward to continued support from the Republic of Angola in advancing the Commission’s mandate and fostering peaceful and sustainable use of the Okavango Basin’s shared water resources.

On March 22, 2026 the world commemorated World water Day, under the theme, Water and Gender. Women and Girls in the CORB often bear the heaviest burden of water collection, facing heightened health risks, safety issues, and limited economic opportunities. The OKACOM Gender Mainstreaming strategy and Action Plan, wishes to adress the comprehensive review of existing gender disparities in the Cubango Okavango River Basin and also explores opportunities within the CORB to incorporate gender-inclusive consultations and planning processes in the design and implementation of all . The Gender mainstreaming Strategy in particular Highlights the importance of mainstreaming gender considerations in biodiversity and water resource management in the Basin and this will go a long way in transforming women from just users to leaders, engineers, scientists, and decision-makers in water management. This will ensure a water governance that is progressive and inclusive. OKACOM has joined the movement with other river basin organisations within the auspices of SADC to improve and encourage Women leadership roles in water diplomacy in the region. Plans are underway to launch the SADC Women in Water Diplomacy Network Chapter in line with the global movement of women in water diplomacy network.

The Project Coordinator for Regional Climate Resilient Programme Mr. Titus Nglandu Pays Courtesy Visit to OKACOM

Following a decision to award a Consultancy Contract to OKACOM in February 2026 for the; Supervision and Facilitation of Stakeholder Engagement in the development of Climate Resilient activities in the Okavango River Basin under the Climate resilient project, the Project Coordinator of the SADC Regional Climate Resilient Programme Mr Titus Nglandu accompanied by Mr Dumisani Mndzebele from the SADC Water Division paid a Courtesy visit to OKACOM.

The Regional Climate Resilience Program for Eastern and Southern Africa Project propose a platform for coordinated action on the regional climate change challenge, for testing and expanding the use of standardized and replicable approaches on emerging good practices across countries and sectors and for mobilizing co-financing for this agenda.

The objective of the project is to improve the management of water-related climate impacts in Eastern and Southern Africa. It comprises the following components: (i) Risk Management and Climate Financing; (ii) Infrastructure Investments and Sustainable Asset Management for Climate Resilience; (iii) Adaptive Climate Services for Resilience Communities; (iv) Project Management; and (v) Contingent Emergency Response Component. The project aims to serve as a first step towards a regional platform to tackle climate adaptation through a common and coordinated approach, including on fund raising and consolidating multilateral and bilateral support - which is critical to ensure alignment, development, and scaled-up financing of critical adaptive interventions.

Moloi as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of CORB Fund with effect from the 2nd February 2026.Mr Moloi brings extensive experience in financial management, development finance, investment strategy, social impact funding, along with a proven record of leadership in driving sustainable growth and strengthening institutional performance and will lead the Fund into its next phase of strategic development.

As Executive Director, Mr Moloi will oversee the Fund’s overall direction, partnerships, operations, and long-term investment priorities. We are confident that his expertise and vision will significantly enhance the Fund’s capacity to deliver on its mission.
