On July 29, we held the mid-term presentation of Ms. Naho Tanimura, a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) currently serving in a special needs class at Moremi III Primary School in Maun.
ㅤ
Ms. Tanimura works with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, conducting Cognitive Training (Cog-Tre), Social Skills Training (SST), Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), and vocational learning activities. She has also been developing individual assessment sheets to better understand each learner’s strengths and challenges, as well as creating educational materials tailored to their needs.

During the presentation, she shared the background of her assignment, her activities to date, as well as the achievements and challenges she has encountered. She highlighted her efforts to continue supporting learners with handmade teaching materials when the school's photocopier broke down. She also reported that learners have gradually shown positive changes, such as being able to write letters by referring to a model and becoming better able to identify shapes and characteristics in learning activities, helping to ease some of the challenges they face in learning.

In the afternoon, Ms. Tanimura also delivered a presentation to officials from the Department of Learner Support Services (DLSS). She shared her practical experiences in the classroom, observed changes in learners, and perspectives from Japan’s special needs education system. The session also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the current situation and challenges of special needs education in Botswana.

The daily efforts of volunteers not only support learners in schools but also contribute to dialogue, knowledge sharing, and mutual learning among stakeholders involved in special needs education.
