Today, the Mission, represented by the First Secretary Economic, Ms. Mundia Mukumbuta participated in a workshop facilitated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the Enhancing Capacities of Young Women and Youth-Led Enterprises for Regional Trade (ECoWYERT) Project.

An initiative designed to strengthen the capacities of women- and youth-owned Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), with particular focus on young women in rural and peri-urban areas, to harness opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for income generation, job creation, and poverty reduction.

Through targeted interventions, the project seeks to enhance the productive and entrepreneurial capabilities of women- and youth-led enterprises while supporting their integration into regional value chains, primarily through aggregation mechanisms.

The five-year project (2026–2030), implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the COMESA Federation for Women in Business (COMFWB), the Trade and Development Fund (TDF), the International Trade Centre (ITC), and the Better than Cash Alliance (BTCA), will be implemented across six countries: Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The workshop provided a valuable platform to explore potential collaboration with the Allied Commodity Exchange (ACE), a joint Zambia–Botswana initiative that is approaching operationalisation. Once launched, ACE is expected to address some of the challenges identified in the ECoWYERT country scan findings by providing a structured trading platform that complements the project’s implementation objectives and supports greater participation in regional value chains.

As the ACE project enters its final stages, the Mission remains committed to supporting and facilitating engagements towards its operationalisation, recognising the strategic value of the initiative in advancing shared economic interests between Zambia and Botswana. In the broader context, the Mission views ACE as an important mechanism for strengthening regional trade integration and contributing meaningfully to the objectives of the AfCFTA

BMX CEO Pays Courtesy Call on the Zambia Mission to Strengthen ACE Collaboration

The Chief Executive Officer of the newly launched Botswana Mercantile Exchange (BMX), accompanied by members of the management team, paid a courtesy call on the High Commission of the Republic of Zambia in Gaborone.
During the meeting, the High Commissioner congratulated the CEO on his appointment and commended the successful launch of BMX.

The Mission further provided an overview of the progress made by Zambia and Botswana in advancing the establishment of the Allied Commodity Exchange (ACE), a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing commodity trading and market integration between the two countries.

The Mission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development and operationalisation of ACE and expressed its readiness to continue working closely with BMX and the forthcoming Zambia Mercantile Exchange (ZMX), which is expected to serve, alongside BMX, as a key vehicle for driving the implementation of the Allied Commodity Exchange.

Both the Mission and BMX acknowledged the significant opportunities that ACE presents for promoting regional trade, improving market access for producers and traders, and strengthening economic cooperation between Zambia and Botswana. The parties emphasized the importance of expediting ongoing preparatory work to facilitate the successful operationalisation and eventual launch of the exchange.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepening collaboration and maintaining momentum towards the realization of the Allied Commodity Exchange.
