Thank you, Springboard Amplifier, for organizing the enlightening mentorship session with Gregory Pepper, the founder of Potential Life and Sense. The topic, “Diving into the Needs of Entrepreneurs,” was both insightful and enriching.

As Gregory Pepper stated, “We should design innovation programs with the end goal in mind and use a multi year lense. Whether we are providing programs to create jobs, maximizie startup valuations, or increase their survival rates, we should know what we are measuring to improve over time. With the right feedback liips in place and adapting existing tools to our local context, we can make an increasingly big difference in a short amount of time.”

Our inaugural session of the Reach Hackathon took place on January 27, 2023, at the Entrepreneurship Village. The Reach Hackathon, spearheaded by Darussalam Enterprise (DARe) and Brunei Innovation Lab, with Universiti Brunei Darussalam as the university partner, is a six-week program designed exclusively for Higher Education Learning students. A total of 47 students have enrolled in the Reach Hackathon.

UBD students participating in the hackathon are tasked with devising innovative solutions to industry problems. Subsequently, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills, contributing to tangible advancements in various industries.

The primary goal of Reach Hackathons is to instill a culture of innovation by encouraging students to think beyond conventional boundaries. The hackathons serve as a platform to bring together students from diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and skill sets, facilitating networking, interdisciplinary team formation, and collaboration on projects. This interaction often leads to valuable connections and potential future partnerships.

Hackathons present participants with specific challenges or problem statements, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills as teams work together to develop solutions within a constrained time frame. Universities aim to instill an entrepreneurial mindset among students, and hackathons play a pivotal role in cultivating this culture by encouraging students to explore their entrepreneurial ideas and transform them into viable projects or startups.

On October 25th, 2023, we had the privilege of witnessing several of our alumni startups participating in the Innovation Challenge organized by the Brunei Innovation Lab. This challenge spans a 5-week program aimed at tackling real-world issues shared by industry players, fostering innovative ideas, and cultivating technological solutions with commercial potential.

Among the notable UBD Startup teams were Ultimate, Pelihara (Keplar), and everBetter. Ultimate focuses on enticing tourists to explore and engage in local tour programs and activities.
