Someone you know may have a valid Australian work visa, but that does not mean that the visa you’re applying for has the same work rights.

It’s up to you to check whether your visa allows you to work in Australia. Only trust official sources, like the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs website or the Australian High Commission in Brunei website. An Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) does not allow you to work in Australia. Any non-citizen on an ETA who is working in Australia is doing so illegally.

It’s the most reliable way to understand what you can and can’t do while in Australia.

Building connections through conversation 🇦🇺🇧🇳

It was a pleasure to welcome President of the Australian National Imams Council, to Brunei Darussalam this week.

Imam Shadi’s engagements with Brunei Darussalam’s Minister of Religious Affairs, Rector of .unissa, Director of .bn, and the students and teachers of Miftah An-Nur School were invaluable opportunities to strengthen partnerships, and to exchange unique perspectives on faith and culture.

Enduring friendships are built through open dialogue and shared learning 🤝

Building a stronger economic future 🇦🇺🇧🇳

I am pleased to welcome Ms Lisa Rodgers PSM as Australia’s new Business Champion for Brunei Darussalam!

Under Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, Lisa will leverage her global leadership at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to connect Australian and Bruneian experts and service our shared skills needs.

ACER has been a trusted partner to Brunei’s Ministry of Education for over two decades, most recently shaping the nation’s first AI and digital literacy standards to support His Majesty’s Brunei Vision (Wawasan) 2035. Lisa will also oversee ACER’s running of the next PISA exams in 2029, the global standard for schools testing.

A huge thank you to our inaugural Business Champion, Dr Nur Rahman, for his incredible work. We look forward to Lisa continuing this momentum and deepening our economic cooperation!

A little bridge goes a long way 🌉🇦🇺🇧🇳

Teachers Casie Richardson and Mel McGown from Port Lincoln High School crossed more than just borders as they visited their sister school, Maktab Sains, through the ASEAN-Australia BRIDGE program.

Hosted by Cikgu Ani Bahe, they stepped into everyday school life in Brunei, sharing lessons and ideas, and connecting with students and staff at Maktab Sains.

Their visit also landed at the perfect time: the final week of Hari Raya, giving them a front-row seat to Brunei’s legendary hospitality (and, we suspect, more than a few great meals along the way).

Programs like these help build connections beyond the classroom, creating friendships, shared learning, and stronger ties between Australia and Brunei.

Next stop: Australia ✈️ We’re looking forward to welcoming Cikgu Ani and Sufe to Port Lincoln this June as the exchange continues.

“Even when it’s uncomfortable, that’s how we grow.” - Diyana, Australia Awards Scholar 🎓🌏

Brunei’s first (but not last!) PhD scholar under the Australia Awards, Diyana’s journey is a reminder that growth often begins with challenge. Her journey, shaped by questioning assumptions and finding clarity and confidence, shows what’s possible when you take that leap.

Guided by mentors she admires and driven by purpose, she’s turning opportunity into impact & paving the way for others to follow.

ANZAC Day holds a special place in Australia’s national story - a day to honour the service and sacrifice in wars, conflicts, peacekeeping missions, and humanitarian operations.

At dawn this morning, the Australian High Commission gathered at the Brunei-Australia Memorial at Muara Beach - the very site where Australian forces landed in 1945 during the liberation of Borneo.

Together, we reflected on the bravery, resilience and unwavering spirit of the ANZACs. We also renewed our shared commitment to peace and to the values of courage and service that this day embodies.

Lest we forget.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, accompanied by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, visited Istana Nurul Iman on 15 April, at the invitation of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
