On September 6, 1885, Bulgaria achieved one of the most remarkable acts in its modern history: the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia were united.

The Unification was driven by Bulgarians themselves, demonstrating the power of national unity and determination.

It became a defining moment in Bulgaria’s history — a reminder that unity, courage and a shared national vision can change the course of a country.

NESTINARI — BULGARIA’S FIRE-DANCING TRADITION 🔥

Every year, in the Bulgarian village of Balgari in the Strandzha Mountains, Nestinari perform a spectacular ancient ritual: dancing barefoot over glowing embers. 🔥

🌙 The ritual takes place traditionally on 3 June (21 May Old Style), the feast of St Constantine and St Helena.

👣 The dancers enter the fire barefoot, carrying sacred icons, while traditional music and the rhythm of the gaida and drum accompany the ritual.

✨ Nestinarstvo is far more than a spectacle — it is a deeply spiritual tradition connected with faith, purification, protection and the community.

🏛️ In 2009, UNESCO inscribed Nestinarstvo on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

🇧🇬 A tradition where faith meets fire — and Bulgaria keeps an ancient ritual alive.
